Coolant leaking from water pump?!?!
Whats up brothers I really dig the site!!! I have a problem I have a 85 FZ 750 with 20,000 miles that i bought for $500 I put about 2K miles on it and then it happened. On the left side of the bike it is leaking coolant from the either the water pump gasket or behind the pump, so I have a shop manual and removed the sprocket cover, removed the water pump cover and there is a round rubber gasket that fits into two grooves like the float bowl gasket. It looks good i guess?!?!? I hope and pray that the problem isnt behind the water pump assembly because my manual states there is a seal that has to be pressed in place with special tools. ANYBODY had this problem before?? Dont want to spend money on something that isnt broken. what do yall think
Re: Coolant leaking from water pump?!?!
All water pump assemblies are pretty much the same, no matter what type of vehicle.. There's a "pressure relief" vent on the pumps in case the pump seizes up.. This allows the coolant to push out of the housing instead of blowing lines (I'm pretty sure I have that worded correctly).. If you take the water pump off, pull the inner half out of the crankcase as well.. There's an o-ring in there and you'll see a shaft with a notch in the end. Check to make sure that the inner o-ring is ok, and try turning the pump blades by hand. You should be able to, but if you can't, then chances are you're water pump has seized and you'll need a new one..
Someone correct me if I'm wrong with this...

I hate to say it, but if you look carefully, he said it's a 1985 FZ750, the forerunner to our FZR's, so the water pump design may indeed be different than ours.
One thing that would help are some pictures; we always love pictures around here, and it may help us to envision what you're talking about a little better.

should still be relatively the same though.. might be a little off, but the concept's gonna be the same.

Re: Coolant leaking from water pump?!?!
THANK YOU fellas for your input I am makin this quick post and going to snap some pics. THANX AGAIN i dont know where else to ask, I have been studying my repair manual like the Bible and come to the conclusion that its either the pump gasket or the seal.
