Greetings from Washington State. New to the forum here. I have an '85 FZ 750 and '87/'88 FZ 1000 wheels,brakes I want to put on the 750. I have the swingarm for the 1000 but not the shock. I tried to fit up the 1000 wheel to the 750 swingarm but could not get the rr caliper bracket to fit as there was not enough room. The wheel minus the bracket mounts up fine and presents no clearance problems with a 170/60/18 mounted on it. I have seen this mod done on numerous occasions but if anyone knows how to do this swap correctly I would appreciate any info. At this point I'm thinking the 1000 swingarm must be used. The lower shock linkages are different between the bikes and the 1000 swingarm is over an inch wider but I'm guessing the upper shock mount dimensions are identical and that I need a 1000 shock to make things work. The widths of the swingarms are identical at the frame pivot point so the 1000 arm will fit. I hope this mod doesn't require welding ect. Here are some pics.

Nice. We don't have a lot of 750 owners here. Then again, there are not a lot of 750 owner's period (at least compared to the masses of 600's and 1k's). I'm betting that you will need the 1000 swingarm to do this correctly. Just out of curiosity, is there a reason you are swapping wheels and keeping the 18" rim? Most people try to get rid of the 18" rim to allow for a better selection of rubber. As about the welding, I have no idea. But historically, Yamaha has kept the 750 and 1000 very similar so you might get lucky.

As far as the wheel size, the guy I bought the fork, swingarm and wheels from would only sell the set together. I figured the FZ 750 had a stock 16" front and an 18" rear and for the price it was worth it. The front end also had braided lines. We all know most of the braking is up front and the front end swap should be straightforward(same bearings and races on both bikes). Been thinking about this for a little bit. Obviously making a spacer/caliper bracket is a little too much for this. I'm assuming that since you got the wheel in there, the axle diameters are the same. Which caliper bracket are you using? The 750 I would think is way to wide for the 1000 rim as a rim for a 130 tire will be vastly different from a rim for a 160 tire. Is the 750 bracket the one in the picture? Do you have or can you find the 1000 caliper bracket? I'm thinking that 1000 brakcet might be the correct width to work with the wheel / swingarm combo. Or you might be able to machine one end down to the correct width. You would also need the spacer for the sprocket side as well from the 1000. All this is assuming the swingarms are the same width at the wheel axle point.

Made some progress and looks like I need the FZR 1000 shock and linkage. Found them Ebay for fair prices so the wheels, swingarm and fork should go on ok. Spent two days sanding and polishing the old V&H Supersport exhaust canister and got it looking ok. Going to try freezing water in two of the lower header pipes to push out a couple dents. Here's a couple pics of the canister from Saturday and today.

Some progress to report today, I've been trying different combinations of FZ 750 and FZR 1000 swingarms, shocks and linkages and have settled on the stock 750 swingarm and shock. I ended up "machining" the rear caliper bracket and have what is almost a complete setup for the rear FZR 1000 wheel. Some more tweaking and rounding up a spacing collar should do it. I tried an FZR 1000 shock and linkage but the FZ 750 frame ears were different and the linkage would not line up. The rear caliper brackets are identical between the two bikes and modifying it was the simplest way to go. I need to find(or make) the LH RR wheel spacer for the FZR 1000 wheel. Yamaha doesn't sell the part anymore(Part # 90387-171T6-00). The RH spacer was the same on the 750 and I have several of those. The LH 750 spacer is a larger diameter and I can get that one machined down if I have to but...$$$. Some pics:

That looks really good. We don't see a lot of FZs on here, so I'm glad to have you. Hopefully we can attract some more since I know there are people out there with them.

Hi there; ive got an 86 fz750 with original stainless headers; ive got a coupple of dings as well; never heard of the frzen water trick; would appreciate hearing about it; thanks

I saw the comments about fuel tanks. I've got a well-massaged TZ125 tank (aluminum) that is in need of some loving attention, and I'm just wondering if I need to worry about work-hardening. A bang to make a dent, a shove to push it back - will it split on me? WIll it be so hard that the next time I skitter along in the middle of Allen's Corner at Shannonville, I risk it making like an R6 tank and exploding into flames?

Annealing is the obvious answer, but I can't say I've ever annealed anything, much less a mild Al fuel tank...

After getting some help from a rider in England who completed the FZR 1000 swingarm swap onto an FZ 750, I gave the swap another try. After a bit of cutting and grinding last night I got the swingarm fit up with the FZR shock and linkage. Here are a few pics:


Swingarm, shock and linkage installed, still a bit more grinding to do to clean up and give plenty of clearance.


Prior to grinding off centerstand spring clip and material from both mounting ears.


After grinding, it all lines up. Discovered that the 750 linkage bolt is a larger diameter than the 1000 bolt. Used a rear engine mount bolt from the 750 (note the long bolt) that was the right diameter. I think I can have the 1000 bushing machined out to accept the 750 mounting bolt.


I haven't given up the idea of keeping the centerstand which is why I didn't just whack the whole lower ear off. I'll see today if that's a pipe dream or not.

Today I finished the cutting and grinding, figured out I would have to lose the centerstand which pains me greatly, but off it went. I'm happy with how it turned out. Also, my friend Chris in Missouri told me about Chaparral Motorsports and they had the Yamaha RR wheel spacer I needed that the local Yamaha Dealer said was a discontinued part. Hell of a good day! Centerstand had to go and I'll miss it dearly, I'm old and I like centerstands that come with the bike...

The stock shock was made by Ohlins.


The FZR bushing needs to be drilled or machined to accept the larger diameter 750 mounting bolt.


Different ID's on the two bushings.


All done but for paint.






Everything but a rr wheel spacer and two 6mm spacers for the linkage.






That's a 170/60/18 Metzler on there.
