FZRSupport: the FZROnline Archive

Hi all,

Im new to the site but not new to biking.

Im currently undertaking a new project. Ive been wanting to do something like this for many years now.

Ive purchased a rolling chassis including frame, engine and all running gear etc but the frame is pretty much rotton in places.

Its a 1989 fzr600 genisis that ive bought. Both engine and frame numbers start 3he which i believe is right for that year.

My question is, will my 3he engine fit into a '95 year frame which i think is 4jh or something.

I can get my hands on this later frame which is in great condition but would all running gear etc fit.

Im not worried about bodywork or lights etc as it will be a custom bike by the end but any help would be great.

The frame i have (3he) has engine support bars either side of the bike but not sure if the later ones do as the frame i can get my hands on doesnt have these bars.

Im very confident with bikes, i currently have a ducati 748 which i do all my own belts etc and have 1000's in the past but never gone as far as a total restore.

Hi Matt,

The 4JH designation that you mention is actually for the Foxeye '95 / '96 YZF600. In other parts of the world, this same bike is referred to as an FZR (beginning in the '94 model year). Your location indicates that you are in the Southwest - I assume you mean the Southwest U.S. Since your specific situation isn't exactly clear, I'll just make these two points and hopefully, that will shed some light on your question:

IF the frame you are considering is actually a U.S. FZR600 frame:

1 - Any year 3HE FZR600 motor will fit in any year 3HE FZR600 frame.

ELSE IF the frame that you are considering is a YZF600 frame:

2 - Since the YZF600 motor fits in the 3HE frame with no mods (as for motor fitment anyways), it stands to reason that the opposite should also be true. I just don't recall anyone putting an FZR motor into a YZF frame. The only issue that I would see is that the FZR motor does not have the mounting holes to support the front of the motor (since it uses the down tubes that you described).

Yes your right, i did some research too on this and found the 4jh is actually off of the foxeye model so thought i would have a problem. I then decided to see how the engine mounted and yes your right it supported up top on the head and not on the down tubes which means it wouldnt work for my setup.

I decided it would be to much hassle trying to mod the engine to fit the frame so i picked up another 3HE frame and V5 yesterday. It was a 620 mile around trip but was worth the travelling as its pretty much mint.

Im going to use the old/original frame to play around with whilst i do my r6 swingarm mod and butcher that one before touching the newer one so i can get it perfect.
