Engine and gearbox share the same oil.

Thats why u cant just use any oil as if it contains "friction modifiers" your clutch will slip.
Fine for cars ,not for bikes.

Look up "unit construction" and "pre unit construction" on wikipedia

Yep the only fluids you've got are engine oil, coolant, gas, and brake fluid. Easy enough to keep track of eh?

Lol, I was going to ask about the blinker fluid. We shouldn't make fun though, I sure did some dum things when I started working on bikes. I was to embarrassed to ask for help. Looking back at things I would have saved a lot of money! I guess he is doing the smart thing. Way better safe than sorry and broke.

This is my first bike been riding for less than a year. I have
worked on cars my entire life. And I know some bikes have oil and tyranny fluid. But if you saw that I said "this is going to sound like a dumb question. Because it does to me." Why would you feel the need to pipe up with a un needed smart ass comment?

Cntryboy,

they are all just having a little fun with you, 'cause, you know what? they(we) have all been there.

The way it goes is two stroke bike engines require trans oil (no recirculating engine oil to do the trans too)..

and older (older tech that is) 'pre-unit' engines separate the powerplant from the driveline (Harley non sportster engines, british things, and early early japanese four strokes)..

ours (modern) bike engines are 'unit construction'...meaning shared engine and trans oil-usually with one common casting containing both (hence 'unit').

HD big twins and most early bikes had a primary drive connecting to a separate gearbox..sometimes the primary oil was shared with the engine, sometimes with the trans, and sometimes was it's own sealed unit using only it's own oil.

There ARE advantages to non unit construction...the harley guys get to alter their primary drive ratios, and can swap in a 6 speed gearbox to replace their old 4speed if they want to. I am hearing that there are now SEVEN speed(two or three overdrive ratios) HD transmissions.

No worries we all have them. You can score some very cool FZR parts while in Japan. Personally I'd bring back an entire FZR400 3TJ in my luggage.
