Fzr600 89 will not fire from starter.

Hi guys im from aus and have just purchased an 89 fzr 600 genesis. I got it fairly cheap and had a mate of mine ride it home for me. It started and rode fine. When i got it home i tryed to start it a few days later and it kicks over and over but will not start. The fuel pump is working and it has clean fuel. So i tryed to bump start it and it bumps very easy and will then idle and ride perfect. I suspected the battery was old so replaced with brand new one. It turns over alot faster now but will still not fire. So i bump start it again and this time its starts even easier( within a few feet). I have checked the igniter box to see if it is sending power to the coils and it sends 10.5volts with the starter motor turning. I must add i can start the bike off the stater within about one minute of stopping the bike after getting it running. But any later and it just keeps turning over.

Thankyou for your time, help much appreciated.

Hiya, Cod-Fish - welcome to the madness!

First off, the FZRs use TCI, not CDI - big difference. They don't "send" voltage to the coils, but rather allow it to flow, charging the coils from the battery. On that note, 10.5v is rather low - check your battery terminals for security, make sure you got them good and snug.

Second, this sounds like you're also having issues caused by tight valves - too-small running clearances means you lose compression, leading to hard starting. The stronger spark allowed by a bump-start (no power lost to the starter) can sometimes overcome this. Check your valve clearances.

Third. you have an FZR, not a YZF - topic moved ,,, :whistle

Thanks Don. Would the valves only cause hard starts or dramas when it runs to? Can I check to see if I'm getting spark by just pulling a plug And earthing it? Because it smells very bad of un burnt fuel if I have been trying to start it.

Once the bike actually gets started, the valves heat up enough to achieve a good seal. Since the compression is too low to allow proper ignition, it WILL stink of unburned fuel, because, well, the fuel isn't burning - that's the problem, isn't it?

You can certainly pull a plug for a spark check, it never hurts to be sure.

Okay so is there any one of testing the valves or pin pointing exactly if it's them befor I pull the motor apart? Could I pull a plug and run a normal compression tester?

Checking the valve clearances is "maintenance", not "repair", and isn't that hard to do. Do you have a manual?

Yeah I'll have a look in the manual tonight. Thanks

i have played with cars befor and to me the compression seems to be fine. The carbys are sucking and the exhaust has pressure. I had a quick play tonight and it seems i cannot get any spark. I pulled the leads and tried a brand new spark plug earthed to the motor and i cannot get a spark. What should i try next?
