Gas light on, but not when 'res'

Just bought the bike, so all is new to me. Found that when I have the 'ON/RES' switch (toggle switch on the left fairing) in the on position, I get the gas light. It turns off when I switch it to reserve, even with full tank. It confuses me bc, I thought the light was independent from the on/res switch? If you run low, it should come on. Or is there a gas light for on, and a separate warning when getting low when in 'res'? It sounds like a sending unit problem, but I dont know where the thing is. Havent pulled the tank yet (no garage, and lots of rain lately) but I will this weekend. Anyone have pointers on what to look for, or what to check? I did lift the tank one day (not removed), and noticed that I didnt see a petcock on the tank either, just 3 or so hoses, and a wire connector (assuming that leads to the sending unit and/or fuel pump).
