So I have a 94 FZR 600 and I started noticing at the end of last year's riding season my lights would get dim and then sometimes bright. I also had purchased a Mottobatt Gel Battery because my old non sealed battery would have acid leaking from battery boiling over. So I had to end up getting a warranty replacement on my Gel battery cause it swelled. I talked to the rep and he said that was from overcharging. Now I didn't realize all these signs of what this all meant at the time. So I decided to get some HIDS for my bike and I have a problem where they are fine below 3k rpm but past that they go off and on frequently. So I tried them connected directly to the battery and still the same issue. Which tells me something is rotten in my electrical system.

So I've done some searching here on this forum and a couple other sites which all point to a bad VR. I go out today and remove the old crappy oem one with no fins. First thing I notice is 2 rather big cracks in the VR and looks like a 3rd coming soon if I didn't catch it. I'm now praying it is just the VR and it didn't damage the stator. If I read right a bad VR can ruin a stator , so someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. It seems as it is flipping from undercharging to overcharging and going back and forth because I don't ever have a dead battery issue. Which is probably another reason I didn't put all the warning signs together.

Well I've done extensive research and I see the R6 mod for the VR. This looks fairly easy to do from what I have seen and in pictures of the process. I did however find a Rick's VR on Ebay which appears to have fins unlike my old VR for 89-94. So my question is... should I just do the R6 mod and be done with it or try the Rick's VR with Fins ?

A fried VRR CAN damage the stator, but it is far more likely to damage your battery (as it has), your TCI, and your various other electricals. You are actually quite lucky that your situation hasn't resulted in a dead TCI already.

I don't know what that VRR is from Rick's, but that's not the connector for a FZR600. I would suggest the R6 VRR; conflict of interest - I sell adaptors to make upgrading to the R6 unit very easy. (ahem)

I've seen people say it will and others say it won't ruin or damage the stator. I guess that is a matter of opinion between lots of people. I'm not a mechanic or a electrical person and the whole motorcycle electrical aspect I'm still learning a lot at this time. I feel pretty lucky I have not fried anything yet on my bike. The VRR that came off my bike is in pathetic shape and I would bet anything it is for sure bad looking at it and I'm not sure how the bike was even working without more major issues than I already had. I have 2 cracks in the VR which are close to a half inch each and one other that hasn't cracked but it would soon and is much larger. So I'd say that is a good starting point and then I can test from there to determine if it's more than just the VRR.


I'm just going to bite the bullet and do it right and go with the R6 VRR Upgrade. It just doesn't make sense to buy another regular VRR and if I'm lucky it might last a riding season and I'd be buying another which would be close to the cost of what I could pay for the R6 upgrade and be done with it now. I feel this is the best route and I might not be so lucky next time if I used the OEM type VRR.

Amateurs, they have no clue, they also talk a load of bollocks and will/could say the VRR can damage the stator. Any one with any sense knows the VRR is upstream of the stator. There's absolutely NO way the VRR can damage the stator.

Grab and install the YZF/R6 VRR follow the flow chart, bobs your uncle

I got my R6 VRR today. I bought a brand new one since most the used ones on Ebay were way over priced or looked in poor condition. I have it installed and everything is working peachy and It really was probably the easiest upgrade I've ever done. Probably took me 15 minutes , I already had the old one off. So I just had to add the extra ground and wire connectors.
