i know im new here and asking for help isn't something exactly smiled upon but im in a big pickle here.
I have a 91 that wont get spark, i dont know much about bikes. I checked the coil packs and im getting 12v to each pack on all 4 wires. To me that doesn't seem right to get power to a black wire that i would assume is ground. I checked all fuses and all were good. When i got the bike it had a toggle switch for the starter and a rocker switch for the ignition. I didn't have any problems last year with it but when i got it out this year the battery was shot, after replacing the battery it will just crank but not start. I tried with the kick stand up and down and nothing changed. Can someone please give me an idea or two and help a newbie get me back on the road?

I thank any help given and look forward to learning from you guys

Really the first step is to check if your getting a spark at the plugs.

1) remove plug 1
2) reconnect to the spark plug lead
3) ground the body of the plug to the frame
4) kick it over and watch for a spark.
5) repeat with the remaining 3 plugs

Its a good idea to make or buy a spark gap tester. Great for confirming the intensity of your spark.
Let us know the results and we can help more from that point.

If you cant get it to ground out on the frame, hold the tip of the spark plug and feel for the spark :duh:

Check your wiring at the toggle switch. If someone hacked the ignition there its a good chance the monetary switch for the starter has juice all the time, so check your wiring at the toggle to confirm you are getting power to the ignition system.

If people don't ask for help, then we might as well shut the site down. As far as I know, its the only reason we exist.

Ask away...

ok, so i went through the wiring system like crazy and still havent found anything. I tested the sensors and the ignition coils as stated in the link(thanks) and i still cant get spark. This is starting to make me very angry. Could it be the TCI? or....

another update

I got it to fire but at the same time it was only a backfire, i went off the firing order i could find on here via the search bar. It lists the left coil (sitting on the bike) as cylinders 1&4 and the other 2&3. It also said that if i remember right that the left coil should have the longer spark plug wire with the shorter one and the other coil's wires would be about the same length. mine are opposite so i was assuming that the last guy that changed the coils put them on switched, following my theory is what got the bike to fire over but at the same time a backfire means theres a spark happening on an exhaust stroke meaning the plugs are wrong, right? its 11:30 at night and my neighbors dont like loud noises so im done for the night but be back at it bright and early. If anyone has any other suggestions im all ears.

Swapped spark will do that. Pull your tank cover, check the coils are located correctly, the right leads are going to the right plugs, AND the right wires are connected to the right coil - orange wire to 1-4, grey wire to 2-3.

still no go, ive swapped plug wires in every possible way and still no go. I sprayed a little starting fluid in the carbs and still no go. i know i have spark and a pretty strong smell of gas so i assume its getting it. The plugs look at little wet when pulled. All things present for a motor to run, fire, gas, and air but still no go

I know this may sounds idiotic but is your battery decent? I know mine doesn't like starting when the battery isn't fuply charged. Hook it up to a booster pack or even a car battery, and give the starter quick 5 second burts whilst twisting the throttle. I had to do this with me after its rebuild, it pissed itself then sprouted into life. Its worth a shot?

i tried the car and it just backfires out the carbs and the pipe. this is getting to be quite hectic and seeming not to be worth it.
