Nunya's '93 Resto-mod Build [TMI?]

Post by Nunya_Binnez »

Well I figure it's about time I start my own build thread. I hope you guys find it interesting.

I have owned a few bikes over the years. My first was a 1970 Triumph 650 Tiger that I restored and rode/loved until I joined the Army and sold it back in 1985.

I briefly owned a 1974 Yamaha DT250 Enduro in lieu of cash for some work I did for a friend.

My next bike was a 1988 Kawasaki Ninja 600 that I bought when I was stationed at Fort Ord, CA. I really enjoyed that bike. My friends and I would go on Sunday breakfast runs to the mountains near Santa Cruz, tearing-ass up Highway 9 to Alice's Restaurant (not of the Arlo Guthrie fame). I met more ladies when I owned that bike than I could shake a stick at, and I am a serious stick-shaking s.o.b. That love affair was cut tragically short when I let a friend ride my bike. After half a block he plowed right into a parked car resulting in a spectacular explosion of black plastic and an awe-inspiring Superman impression. To add insult to injury, he stood up, removed my $400 Shoei helmet and, apparently in disgust, spiked it like a game-winning-touchdown football. All I could do was fall to my knees and sob like a little girl with a skinned knee. I will NEVER let ANYONE ride a bike of mine again...EVER! That was 1989.

I have always been a fan of the early repli-racers like the first generation GSXRs, ZX-7s, and especially the FZRs. I have wanted one since the first time I saw one in 1990. So after 23 years without a bike, I set out to find one.

I acquired my '93 FZR600 back in November in trade for a sweet AR-15 rifle I built. Here are a couple of photos of it as it looked when I got it:

Image
Obviously been down on it's right side...

Image

Image
Apparently it's also been down on it's left at some point, too...

Image

I took each member of the family for a quick ride around the block before I parked it and started the teardown.

Some of the things I observed from the beginning were;

tires were shot
leaked oil like a sieve
clutch slipped pretty badly
front end had ZERO suspension ability
ran extremely rich
headlight hi/lo switch was missing and was hard-wired to high beam only
windscreen was painted (poorly) black
and the obvious cosmetic issues.

Still, I am extremely, EXTREMELY happy to finally have a bike in the stable again.

Progress has been painfully (literally) slow as I have had to endure two back surgeries, the first of which resulted in an infection in my spine and required the second surgery and two months of I.V. antibiotics. While performing the second surgery, the doctor nicked my spinal cord and caused a leakage of spinal fluid. Talk about agonizing! I am still healing, but I work on the bike as I can and I WILL ride it if it kills me. That also explains why I have waited until now to get this thread off the ground.

I have lots of photos, and will post them as I get them uploaded and resized. Here are a few of the teardown:

Note the tail piece.

Image
Using a soldering iron and some scrap ABS I have lying around, I filled in the tail light opening and I am trying to give it a shape that I feel looks more appealing. I will be using some Custom Dynamics Knight Rider Non-Sequential LED Light Bars to try and give it an updated YZF750 look.

Image
Time will tell.

What a pretty purple! :yuck:

Nekkid frame

I have since had the frame, swingarm, wheels, fork legs and other assorted bits blasted and powder coated, as well as having purchased a bunch of powder coated parts and assorted stuff from Nate (aka ThatKid, GREAT guy!) I will post "as it sits" pics as soon as I can.

Here are some more progress pics;

Image
Forks Reassembled...I installed a set of 1.0kg RaceTech springs, replaced the seals and wipers, and filled them with 15w fork oil.

Image
Here is one of the brake rotors I purchased on evilBay from a guy in China. They look pretty nice, seem to be very well made, and cost less than ONE EBC or Galfer unit for the set of three. I will be posting a product review as soon as I have had a chance to work them over. If anyone is interested I will post a link to the guy's evilBay store.

Image
Here is a pic of my nifty Pro-Bolt Titanium rotor bolts. Mmmmm, titanium!

Image
Front wheel, powder coated gloss black with new All Balls bearings, and rotors mounted with the titanium bolts. Did I mention they're titanium?

Image
A bit closer.

Image
And the rear.

Image
Here's a shot of it as it sat a couple of weeks ago. I haven't made any major progress since.
You can see the Fox twin clicker I bought from Nate (Thanks Nate!) The frame is now powder coated semi-gloss black. The zip ties and hose routing for the reservoir are only temporary, btw.

Image
The forks are mounted with new All Balls bearings in the triple.

Image
This shot shows the R6 calipers, semi-gloss painted front fender, Spiegler brake line(s), and the obligatory RaceTech decal.

Image
Tighter on the calipers.

That's about it for now. I hope to have a rolling chassis by mid-April. I'll update as I progress.

Thanks for your interest.

Finally got my tires mounted and balanced. I will be mounting them up to the bike tomorrow, and I'll post some pics of it as a 'roller', which it hasn't been since December.

I'm pretty excited. My goal is to have it finished by the end of May. Wish me luck, as my wife has different priorities. banghead

This is going to be super sweet!

Congratulations getting back to the bikes, and one you craved for so long.

your gonna have to let us know how you get on with both the tyres and the discs mate, i've been humming and harring over those discs for a while, but never been to convinced on them due to coming from china and the prices, other than tyres the brakes are the second most important thing for me. Have you got the M/C for the brakes as well?? If so how did you mount the reservoir??? Looks sweet non the less mate, Keep it up!!!

I'm definitely going to write a product review on the disks. The tires I bought based on the high praise they have received right here and on the 'other' forum.

I bought the entire R6 front brake setup from Nate (thatkid), including the master cylinder. I have to install the upper fairing before I can decide on a mounting location, but when I do I will include the info in this thread.

Thanks for the compliments.

I have some down-time while I wait for more parts, so I decided to work on some of the smaller details.

My tach was not working properly (wouldn't move past 2k rpms). Armed with the knowledge that the VRR had failed and cooked all of the lights and the hi/low beam switch, I could safely assume that it also fried something in the tachometer. I was correct. When I examined the electronics, it was obvious from the scorching that the 51ohm resistor had made the ultimate sacrifice. I did a bit of searching and found a replacement for $1.04+shipping.

I plan to eventually replace the OEM gauges with a Koso RX-2...
Image
...but I'll run the stocker until the Commander-in-chief approves the requisition.

Thanks for looking.
