Got a metal something stuck in my tire.

Post by tommyj27 »

I was washing my bike yesterday after work and decided to check tire pressures at the same time (I do regularly anyways, really!). Front was good, but the back was sitting at around 20psi. Checked the tire and found a metal something well embedded in the tread (I guess my mind wasn't playing tricks on the ride home when the handling felt like mush on the freeway). I was going to take it to the stealership after work today and see if they can/will patch it, or replace it if necessary.

I was just curious what you think I should expect to pay at the stealership to a) patch the tire; or b) replace it. I would do it myself, but I've never pulled/patched a bike tire before and with my vacation coming up I would rather just have it done right than dick around with it the way I usually do on repairs.

I know that you should have them patch the inside of it if they do that because I wouldnt trust a plug in a rear tire.

The stealership wanted to charge me $70 to just put a rear tire on!

well there is a reason they're called a stealership!

just out of curiousity, how much work would be involved in doing it myself? Is it even possible to without a fancy mounting machine?

I doubt it. Those tires are pretty stiff. Definatly not worth the headache...prolly end up fudging your rim up, i know i would.

called the stealership, they don't patch, only replace. of course they don't have the O.E. size in stock. I can't remember what size is on my bike, I know it's a battle-ax, either a 140 or 150. Where does everyone here get tires from?

Nice video.. I know I would have explored other methods of bead breakage before resorting to that wooden contraption.

If you have a Cycle Gear in the area, they charge around $20 to change the tire out. Just bring in what you bought somewhere else or buy what they have.

Now you can put a BT-016 or BT-014 150/60/18 on the back! :headbang:

i called a couple of the local stealerships and the cheapest I found was about two bills for a new tire and mount, plus they have to order it in. hopefully they can get it in by the weekend, I'm supposed to do a charity ride on Saturday.

Good video the only thing I disagree about is lining the heavy spot of the tire up with the valve stem, the valve stem isn't always the heaviest spot on my 400 it was about 90 degrees away from the valve stem(one of the spokes).
fzr660/400: fzr400 3en1 frame, 3en2 swinger, custom single seat subframe, fzr660 motor conversion, APE adjustable cam gears, full D&D 4-2-1 exhaust, falicon clutch basket, ignitech ignition, R6 front end with tz250 wheel, ohlins shock, storz steering damper, tzr250 rear wheel.

weighs 166kg wet (25kg lighter than my stock fzr600).

Grrr. Stealership doesn't have their shit together and didn't get the tire ordered, not to mention that they wouldn't be able to get it in until next week anyways. I'm sick of this tire BS, makes me really want to do the YZF swingarm swap or upgrade completely.
