Cant get spark.

Post by otori2013 »

I have a 93 FZR600 that will not start. I changed the spark plugs and did a oil change on it. the bike ran fine a few months ago then i parked it in my shed. When I went to go far a ride it would not fire up. i checked it out and I found out that its not getting any spark. So I tried to jump it off a car battery but still nothing so I went and cleaned all the connectors and plugs, checked the fuses and relays even put in a new TCI box in it, and it still will not spark i have not checked the amps but off the car battery it should get all it needs. I pulled the starting switch off and cleaned it all out, and nothing.

like i said the bike seams fine. fuel pump turns on has plenty of fuel kick stand switch is good. I have no idea what could be wrong with it. please help.

Sounds like the next thing you need to check is to see if the pick-up coil (under the stator cover) has proper resistance between 80-120. You'll need an ohm meter(digital tester). Try to download the Yamaha Service manual, it should be some where on this site and follow the step by step procedures for a no spark condition. (Chapter 8, part 1). If you cant find it, let me know and I'll email it to you.

check that you are getting power through to the coils by testing at the connector block, (have you cleaned these when you say you cleaned connectors?)these can corrode and cause poor connections, also this might flag up if you have a broken wire somewhere that could be the cause as using a different tci didn't have any effect.

I had the bike up and running for a bout a month then right back to where I started. So I have a question.. could this be a bad ground?

It's possible. The engine ground is a fairly rugged wire and terminals, but it's not impossible, especially if the engine has been out at some time in the past.

ok so i pulled my coil pack off and checked my caps and I'm only getting 4.89 ohms on the plugs and when i pulled them apart I checked the resistor and same number. So is there a place I can get new resistors? or do I have to order new caps? And can someone point me to where I can get them. thank you.

Are you using an autoranging DMM? Make sure that isn't 4.89 kOhms; not per the manual, but not impossible, and still something that would work.

That pic shows 5.12kOhms - like I said, not per spec, but still useable.

Well, that's a different story. Any bike shop should have the appropriate caps; the little shops might have to order them in. Bring one with you to make sure you get the right ones - few things are more annoying that waiting a week to get new caps, and find out the ones you ordered are a half-inch too short! banghead

So why am I not getting a reading when I try testing the coil from both ends. And there is no reading on all four wires

Is this reading saying that I need new coils or do I have to ground the coils before I can get a reading?
