Picking up first FZR today?

Hey folks! I posted a few questions last week about potential purchases, and now it looks like today, if all goes well, I will be the proud owner of a 1993 FZR600. I was debating between a '93 and a slightly newer bike. The newer bike's owner flaked, and since the '93 has only 7xxx miles on it (about 5000 less than the newer bike) - I figured swapping the VR was worth it. Also, the '93 has the full fairings and a few extra parts.

I wanted to post this here - because I know you folks can relate with my excitement better than anyone.

Nice! Yeah, the VR is a fairly inexpensive and certainly easy fix.

Still stoked with my 600, it's a former track bike that I'm putting back on the street! I plan to go with orig. paint so as to be able to hurt peoples feelings when I blow the socks off them! Eng.: decked, ported polished heads, after market valves, race clutch, balanced, Penski rear shock...........zoom zoom!

nortstudio - just the adaptor. VRRs are readily available on EBay, the YZF600 forums, and R6 forums.

brcree - Sounds neat, but would it have made more sense to post this in your own thread?

It's in pretty good shape. It's been scraped up etc from years of use - but the PO gave me a few extra fairings, and it came with a new front double bubble.

I know POs can be a little...shall we say, vague. But this guy was pretty open (in my experience), and seemed to have cared for it while the plan was to build it with his son. Then the son opted for a quad runner - he no longer needed this project.

I'll try to get some more pics with some details.

Couple more photos (more, not better, I'm afraid).



It was laid down on the right in a driveway I was told. I've crashed before - and this damage doesn't seem severe. But the right side clip-on is definitely out of whack. I need to replace that ASAP. Also, I'll be working on the carbs first thing. I need to check again, but early after start - it really wanted the choke, or else it bogged (or wanted to stall) after blipping the throttle. Granted, it wasn't warmed up. Maybe I was impatient. This was also not under load - just while idling immediately after starting it up.



How long do you guys let it warm? It's about 45-50 degrees here today, and I read they can be a little cold-blooded.

Also, any suggestions for clipons? I will check the usual suspects (eBay, etc) but what comes up first in google is "Vortex" type - which are about $130+ for a pair. I think I really only need the tube for one side if they are removable. Or are there models that are recommended for better adjustment if I need to get some anyway?

I'm over in Williamsburg. Have a garage not far from the apartment - which makes wrenching SOOOO much better this winter.

Where in Queens? Do you get this way much? We should see about hooking up. I'd love to check out another FZR - one that isn't in rough shape - just to see what I can strive for

Mine is a 1998 FZR 600 with only 10k miles (just a little over)...All original except for the exchaust and the previous owner (women) lowered the bike by swapping the rear shock links with an R6...

I've got a 1993. There is a Vance & Hines on there, K&N filter, not sure if it needed/was rejetted for the exhaust. Not sure what else the guy did or didn't do - but I need to go through it pretty well - because I have some serious hesitation at very low throttle. It's only got 7500 miles on it - but it's been neglected.

The thing that is really concerning me is the feeling when I go over rough bumps/pot holes. It really rattles the bike, and you feel it right up through your spine. Not sure if there is something wrong or if it's just the way these stock rear shocks act???

There is a bracket looking thing down below the bike, near where the base of the shock is, that has nothing on it. I am not sure what that is at all??? Any ideas?

First thing you should do is pick a factory manual (ebay sells a full factory manual on CD for less than $10). You have the whole fall/winter to get acquainted with the bike (esp. a neglected one).

As for some of your questions, your bike is most likely rejetted for the KN filter and VN exhaust.
