Intermittent starter relay? Troubleshooting help please.

Post by jax »

Hi all,

Its been a while as with the killer heat gone in Texas now I am starting to ride my bike again.

My problem is that the bike seems to have a starting problem. I started off by checking the battery. When I took it out the cells next to the vent tube were half way dry. I refilled with distilled water and charged the battery back to health. Getting 12.55 volts after it sits overnight. so I assume its good there.

When I go to start it the starter just behaves like its lazy or won't turn over at all. So the next thing I did was buy a starter rebuild kit ( $21 ) and replace the brush plate and inspect the starter per the chiltons manual. All checked out well and the old brushes were still in decent shape. Same thing happens. It's hit or miss when starting.

Next I'm moving on to the starter relay. What's the best way to check that? I assume grounding out the blue and white wire will activate the relay and send 12V to the starter?

Figured it out. The start button contact pads were dirty and corroded after all these years. Pulled the controls switch apart and cleaned. Good to go now.
