Possible 660

Post by 97fzrnoob »

Just finished tearing my bike down after hearing some awful ticking noises from the top end, short version exhaust valve and piston had a meeting. Piston is toast, valve all sorts of bent, even the valve bucket is shot, so a rebuild of sorts is in order. Been reading the posts about the 660 and trying to put together a parts list for the most economical repair. I figured about $3-400 for just the repairs and keep a fzr motor or $5-600 for a complete swap in motor. The 660 seems around the same price, but I want to make sure I've got the 660 parts coverd: yzf rods, pistons, jugs, heads, carbs, spacer plate and head gasket for the major stuff. All on ebay for decent prices. What rod bearings are required for the conversion? You guys that are running a 660, how has the reliabilty been, and was the conversion worth it? This bike is street only with about 50/50 commute and spirited riding, so im still on the fence about what to do.

You may also want to look into just buying a YZF600 engine. That is a reliable engine and won't cause you all of the major headaches with the 660 build.

I'll be swapping in a YZF motor, so I'll have a complete FZR motor up for grabs in about a month, sooner if I have a buyer.

Im seriously considering the yzf swap. I inspected it again in better light, piston is fine just the head is probably not salvagable because of cost. looks like the spring bucket failed and caused all the trouble in the first place. I have all winter to decide what to do, but I may just put on a used head and sell it off since I got the wife 90% talked into getting a new(er) bike next year. :headscratch: Idk, decisions, decisons.
