Carburetor Problems

Work begins on the carburetors tomorrow. The problem I'm having is that the fuel mix is too rich. I live in South Carolina and the bike is from Rhode Island, so maybe the change in temp has something to do with it. The bike doesn't want to idle and there is a knock at low rpm(below 2k). The exhaust smells VERY rich. There is also very little acceleration in 5th and 6th. If I go to pass, I have to shift to 3rd and get to 7k rpm to get good acceleration. Is this normal? The bike is a 1990 FZR 600. It just hit 10K miles and has never had anything done to the carbs except a simple clean. MY plan is to clean and sync the carbs. If anyone has any pointers or thoughts as to what to try to fix it or other problems I may be overlooking, I'd love to hear.

I'd drop in a set of new plugs as well....maybe an oil/filter change too. The cleaning and synch of the carbs should help a lot.

If you're turning 7k having just dropped to 3rd from 6th gear, I'm not surprised in the least you can't pass! 5k rpm at highway speeds doesn't give you a lot of grunt; you need to keep the revs where you can get out of your own way.

Thanks for the input. Any preferences for plugs?? NGK or Autolite?

Either will work. I do believe the spec is NGK, but I ran Autolites without issue.

You should check your emulsion tubes as well, I was having similar problems (rich and no power at low rpm's) and tore the carbs apart and discovered my tubes are eggshaped, got new ones ordered, recently installed NGK's and bike ran great till it warmed up.
