no spark......

hi all,
a few days back my bike died while i was out, pulled over and checked a few bits but couldnt find a prob, pushed to a petrol station (there was fuel in the tank but high octain so doesnt ignite as easily) refilled the bike, drained carbs and it fired on 1, revved it a lot and the 4 kicked in, got home fine,
went out the next morn and the bike wouldnt start again......checked for a spark after trying a couple of other bits and its not sparking.

tried new plugs and still no luck, was told to check the stator and pickup, bit of rust on the pickup so cleaned it up, still no spark.

disconnected the block connectors from the stator pickup(1 connector with 3 white wires and another with 2) and checked for ohms from them,
getting a reading from the connector with the 3 wires but nothing from the 2.....not sure where to go next.........

any help would be greatly appreciated :)

The 2-pin connector is your crank pick-up coil. If you aren't getting an ohms / continuity reading from that, then you've found your problem. Pull the stator cover, inspect the coil for loose wiring / broken connection. Failing that, swap it for a known good one, see what happens.

cheers guys,

tried a multimeter on ohms going from the pick up to the connection at the end and nothing, put 1 terminal from the meter into the wire coming out of the coil and to the end of the connection and was getting a reading on both so wiring seems ok, the coil is solid so couldnt check the wiring internaly but gave the coil a tap and then put the meter to the 2 connections and its getting a reading, it fluctuates so looks like its getting something but still no spark!

i dont have a spare to test but could try get one on ebay if it looks like thats the problem?

just tried again as found more info on how to test it, checked the 2 wires cming off, pos to red/white and neg to black/white,
set the meter to ohms 200k and got a feading of a bit over 1100........ sound right or wrong to anybody?

The manual says 80-120Ohms @ 20C. I'd say 1100 ohms is bad...

The stock stator and pick-up are bundled together; the EBay listings are for both together. Check the connectors themselves, and the soldering down at the coil.

the pick up is solid, the wires run into it and it does not look like it comes apart to check the soldering.....

In that case, you'll have to replace it. I have nothing more intelligent to say as regards checking; we seem to have found the issue.

Check the various 'parting out' threads, see if someone will cut the sleeve bundling the wires and just sell you the pickup.

Good luck!

cheers man,
yeah thought that might be the case, just took it off and doublechecked and its a solid unit, the meter only gets a reading on 2000k and even then it keeps losing it

had a spark for a second too and then nothing so def seems like thats the problem.

cheers for the help

Rud,
If normal is 80-120 then 1100 sounds like corrosion to me, George is for ever cleaning old connectors and adding Di-electric grease<?> to keep the moisture off them once they are clean. It is a real pain to get off door handles when he has been at it that i do know :-{
