Carb Tuning issues

Post by megaloxana »

Finally got to continuing my carb tune since its been nothing but raining all week. Anyway, I got some issues that I can't seem to get rid of.

First and foremost, I can't get the bike to cruise at 4-4.5k without stumbling with the throttle 1/8 open. At 5k it sounds like a drumroll(not smooth) but doesn't really stumble at all.

Second, it bucks when I give it full open throttle below 3k. This is float heights correct? but does that mean I have to raise or lower them?

Set up as follows:
K&N pods
V&H SS pipe and headers
Factory Pro stage 3
120 mains
4th notch down on needles
2 turns out(went from 1 turn to 4.5 turns but no change in cruise state, at 2 turns it doesn't stumble at 5k like it used to)
Stage 3 pilot jets(forget what size those are)

The emulsion tubes looked ok to me but I didn't get a really good look at them...might take the dial calipers to them.

While you are in there you might as well replace them, even if they are good it can't hurt anything.

That's the problem with running pods... get a flo-commander.

I don't think its necessary to install a flo-commander in order to run pods. I ran pods on my 38k mile motor and did not have this cruising problem. I just can't seem to get rid of it on this 3k mile motor.

The flo-commander just gives a much better control. Pods are so unpredicatable.

Sounds like you're still running too "rich" to me. I would measure the emulsion tubes. I have some used ones at the house that I can measure for variance.

Carb Sync tool! I just did mine and Zero's with the newly purchased Motion Pro carb tuner. It was pretty easy minus getting to the adjustment screws and boy did it help. 1-2 and 3-4 were alright but not great so I got those synced, but damn they were about 8Hg from each other when I had to sync 1-2 to 3-4. My bike finally starts without choke and idles quite well. Also adjusted mixture screws with the infrared heat temp gun. Mine are all at about 200° now. Zero's are all at about 600°. We are not sure why that is but are guessing it's the race work that's been done to the inside of his motor. If it isn't then his motor just runs really freaking hot for some reason, but no issues.

I'll tell ya though, without a good sync anything else you do is kind of worthless. My my2cents

I think 200 is too low and 600 is too high. I would shoot for somewhere around 450 deg at idle. Mine starts too without choke, but it suffers a little when it warms up.

I scoped out my emulsion tubes today and they honestly look fine...I stared at one of them for a good 15 minutes. I couldn't get my calipers inside far enough to measure the orifice. I messed a lil with the float bowls some more and got slightly better cruising but still nowhere near good enough. Im gonna pull the plugs tomorrow and see just how rich i'm running. I might sync my carbs too if I have time..right now they're are bench synced.

OK word of caution...when building your DIY carb sync tool utilizing the two bottle method, USE GLASS BOTTLES..not plastic :duh: :duh: :duh:
