Wonky Tach

I was out cruising around town today and everything was working perfectly (for once). I noticed when I was only a few minutes away from my house that my tachometer was suddenly completely inaccurate. It is showing approximately 1.5-2 times the actual rpm (eg. showing 2500 when idling around 1400).
It has always been spot on before this, and there wasn't any particular reason it should have stopped working. Any ideas?

Check the voltage at the battery when the engine is running.
I am betting it is high (14+ volts DC)
YOur voltage regulator has likely failed.

The VR is a new unit from an R6 that I installed last summer after my original VR failed. I don't have access to a DMM at the moment, but I'll check it this weekend.

B,
R6 VR's do fail and a lot of guys find that the terminals corrode as a point of failure so inspect the joints, Di-electric grease on cleaned contacts will stop corrosion getting out of hand.
