Could it be this causing me problems?

sorted, some people say it's to adjust tickover, some say it's the air/fuel mix. whatever it is it won't be getting touched again.

If you have cranked this thing a lot(sounds like you have) without it starting...especially once the battery gets low....I can pretty much guarantee you that you've fouled the sprak plugs.

If you want it to start, I suggest that you put some new spark plugs in it.

Autolite 4303s willl fit and are far cheaper than NGK or Denso

Ok now we are getting some where, she starts from absolute cold no "choke" what is the idle RPM like ?
is there aslight hesitation from idle to say 1/8 throttle
Ditto from 1/8 to 1/4 throttle?
The reason I ask is that the "choke" may be stuck open, the "choke" is not conventional on these bikes it is really an enrichening circuit with its own jets.
If they are constantly on I would expect VERY black plugs, poor gas consumption figures and the hesitations I mentioned.

sorted that, just a case of adjusting the screw again. now replacing the sump i cracked by over-tightening the sump plug.

new query, do i need to use Gasket cement on the sump gasket? wouldn't bother normally but i got someone telling me i have to

mines the same, only likes choke on for a few secs, then idles at 1-1.3 RPM

Guys,
FZR's are cold hearted machines it could be 70 in the shade and it still needs the "choke" to start maybe not for so long as when it is 32 ish
