She's come a long way, now I need suggestions (PICS INSIDE)

Well she's come along way to be roadworthy. When I first picked her up all the hardware to hold the bodywork was gone, and it had been sitting in a garage for a few years. You can read about how I got it here. http://www.fzronline.com/forum/viewtopi ... =12&t=7893.

Since I first picked her up and gotten her running I've added some LED turn signals on all four corners, wired up the headlight, made brackets for the front tank cover mounts, sawed off those awkward silver brackets and fairing tabs, spray bombed it matte black and wetsanded (still working on that), I got a set of almost new Bridestone Battlax BT014s, I cleaned the crap out of it and got it to my motorsport club's car show just in time. Here are my questions:

The airbox is a spiteful, evil old bastard. Getting it on is damn near impossible, once you get it on one side it pops off the other, and won't tighten enough to hold itself down. After two days I ended up ripping the stacks out of the airbox, putting them on each carb independently, then shoved the airbox down on top of them. All the stacks are on well, but the airbox is sort of loose on the stacks because I can't get it down over the lip. I haven't had the chance to ride it in +45 degree weather, so I don't know if it's really causing throttle problems. I was thinking about taking some sticky tack to create a makeshift gasket between the box and stacks as a short term fix. Here's my big question. Whats the best air intake alternative for these bikes? Pods are a bitch to tune from what I hear, even if you make your own stacks. Is there a tried and true method or kit to add pods and jets?

Speaking of that, my carbs were goshdarn impossible to get back into their boots, it probably took my buddy and I an hour and a half, is there an easy way to fix or avoid that next time they come off?

The headlight bracket is ghetto as a mofo. I have zipties helping to hold the light snug at the moment. I was thinking about switching to a fork mount setup with something off ebay, but I have no idea what to do with the gauges. Does anybody have an idea of how to relocate them and get rid of the fairing bracket? I've seen guys do custom metal brackets to relocate gixxer gauges and sell them, does anyone do that for these bikes?

I was thinking about painting the exhaust matte black, thoughts?

What else should I do with her? I'm going to administer a general tune up soon and bleed the brakes, change the oil, flush the coolant, clean the filter and replace the plugs. I'd like to start daily riding, but I'm going to have to work some parking permit trickery to be able to park it on campus and at my apartment.

A heat gun is your best friend when it comes to the airbox. Heat up the boots that go over the carbs and the airbox slides right on. I was surprised how easy it was when I finally started using a heat gun.

Edited the original post to try and make the pics work.

I tried using a hairdryer but it wasn't hot enough, and I don't have a hairdryer here at school. My sticky tack method worked like a charm this morning though, no throttle lag or anything.

Do yourself a favour Photoshop the rear number plate & tag to be unreadable thieves use them to track bike to steal to order better safe than sorry after making the bike yours !!!

thats a very good point YG i have had it happen to me when i tried to sell an old car, had the Fuzz all over me like a rash till they worked out the car i had was a blue mk2 escort and the one with my plates on was a mk3. would never post a pic with the plates on ever again!!!!!

I took it for a good ride yesterday and noticed I have a tap tap tap sound between 4-6k in any gear. I can feel it slightly through the left foot peg. Its probably on a 1/2 sec frequency and that doesnt change, it just comes in around 4k and goes away around 6k. Its only when under throttle, especially just regular acceleration.

The chain is properly adjusted, but it seems like something a chain would cause, any ideas?

+1 on it being the chain. You probably have a lightly frozen link. Either give your chain a kerosene bath or get a new one. I had the same thing when I bought my bike. The tapping disappeared when I replaced my chain with a 520 kit.

Well spotted, it certainly looks that way, I was just concerned about the licence plate being posted for thieves to track down

It would make a lot more sense to go the other way huh? Gimme a break the only FZR I've seen in person is this one and I got it in a few pieces.

I edited the photo, does anyone have suggestions about that tapping sound?

thanks for the edit, yup 3d jigsaws are a challenge for sure,

I think the drive chain should be looked at, cleaned(brass brush ), soaked ( in paraffin) , lubed and put back on, see if it still ticks when ridden

I'm having some headlight issues. It will come on when i turn the key, go off with the starter and not come back on. No amount of shaking or squeezing the harness will make it come back on, also, bumps don't seem to affect it. After riding it will eventually come back on. Sometimes it doesn't come on at all, sometimes it comes on and works perfectly.

A bad ground seems like a good culprit, but you'd think I could get it back on by shaking the harness, or it would at least flicker. But then again, when I use the turns and the light is out they flash at different rates, and they share a ground with the light. Now that I've written all this out it might also be a short, I should go out and inspect and clean up my wiring.

Have you tried swapping the bulb out could be on it's way out won't do any harm refreshing the bulb connections by putting a new one in either

Also, as far as the headlight goes. I can see in your pics that you have the stock right hand control. The FZR is notorious for the blue wire in the rh control getting unsoldered. Crack that puppy open and see if that's the issue. It's the wire that tells the bike to cut the headlight while cranking so that it's not a big draw on the battery.
