Please point me in the right direction.

Post by Bagualinc »

Hello all. I have a 1997 fzr600 with an electrical issue that's baffling me ( not that baffling me is a major accomplishment). I took her out for a fill up and of course shut off the engine. When I tried to start her back up - nothing. Only parking lights. No headlights, neutral light, turn signal, horn, brake lights, and of course not a hint of starting. It was running perfectly just prior. The battery and fuses ( including the main fuse) are fine. No funny smell. I just don't know where to start (no pun intended). HELP!

There is another guy on the board haveing a similar problem. However your no headlights difference leads me to believe that the blue wire that s inside you right hand control has become unsoldered. It's quite common and can strike any time. Even if the bike is working perfectly before that.
I would start there.

You blew a fuse. Check the fuse block and replace the blown one. Then you need to track down the wire that is grounding out and causing the short. Mine did this once and it was the wire for the horn hitting the radiator.

Thank you. All of the fuses check out fine. The blue wire is still attached in the rh control. How many differen wires could possibly cause these symptoms? Obviously I'll begin with a more thorough check of the rh wires and fuse box assembly when I get in tomorrow. Are there any that I can safely ignore or at least hold off on as a last resort. I'll eventually check them all if I have to but I'd rather go in a logical order. Should the wires have obvious damage or will I have to do more than a visual check? :tks:

A wire broken inside the insulation can be annoyingly inconspicuous. If you have a continuity tester, that might help.

Is it possible that the main relay is the problem? Is there a way to test just that part?

I got a new (new to me) wiring harness and just replaced the wires. Now everything works except the most important part. IT WONT START!!!! I've got lights, turn signals and all of the rest. When I switch the starter button to "run" I get nothing. If I push in the (grey) starter button the lights go off and everything except no starting. I don't even get that grumble I usually heard when I first flicked the red switch to run. I'm just confused now!

check your starter relay. when you push the button you should have +12 come in to activate the relay. If you dont then start wire chasing from that point back to the controls.

and check the kickstand switch and the switch at the clutch.

I would bypass both the clutch and kickstand switches to troubleshoot. Once you figure out what the problem is put them back.

She's Baaackkk!!! :headbang:
Thank you all so much! After replacing the wiring harness and getting everything but the ignition working I tried to start her via the starter solenoid. It would start so I felt a little relief knowing that I was still just dealing with an electrical issue (not that that's a goo thing). I went through the wiring again and noticed that one of the red/white wires coming from the RH wasn't making contact at the connector. Now all is well! Doing it yourself (with a lot of help from all of you!) feels pretty good. God knows what I would have been charged at a dealer, not to mention getting it there. Plus I've now gone over parts of the bike that I didn't know existed. Thanks again! :tks:

Sweet. Glad you got it figured out. I thought you mentioned that you had already checked the controls wiring.
