The bike wont start (starter wont operate) and the relay just clicks when pressing the starter button so after checking/cleaning all connections, I've concluded that its probably the starter relay. The Yamaha service manual outlines a procedure to test the relay by simply disconnecting the blue/white lead (small wire) from the relay and grounding it to the frame to operate the starter. I did this and test failed which means relay is bad according to manual. Has any one tried this before and got the starter to operate???? I just want some assurance before replacing the relay.
BTW, my starter motor is good (turns on when i connect direct to battery) and battery is good. Thanks

make sure you dont have power to the starter first. when hitting the start button you will see 12v at the starter, well you should. if not i would trace the wiring till i found the open in the circuit, which will prob be the relay. just cause it clicks doesnt mean it works.

Sounds like the relay if your battery is up. You can take the big wire from the starter off the relay and firmly hold it to pos. side of battery starter should spin. If it does most likely its the relay not much else to the circuit. The starter button is working since it clicks the relay. The relays usually go out in the way your describing. The switch contacts inside the relay arc a little each time their used and eventually this ruins the connectivity. I just replaced mine when I bought my bike about 3 weeks ago. I paid 60 bucks for a replacement at a local bike shop. The dealer wanted 80. I saw some on ebay recently for I believe about 30 bucks brand new probably from China instead of Japan. Should be okay though.
