Sprocket Kit
What's going on guys? Long time no chit-chat. Damn work is taking all of my time. I managed to squeeze some time and managed to buy a rear Bridgestone BT-016.. (I hear great reviews about it)..So I guess it's time to change the sprockets and the chain.
My question is , what is there available in a 520(14/47) and stainless steel ,not aluminum sprockets?
From what I hear the weight difference is not really significant and the aluminum sprockets wear too quick.Looks like RK only makes alum. rear sprockets. I don't want to change the rear sprocket every 2000-3000 miles.
Thanks for any help!

Re: Sprocket Kit
Edit. I have the same bike as you and I got a 14/49 combo shipped for 129. I would add the ptfe(that probably isnt correct) coating. There was an extra cost but I remember it being nominal.

Was that a 520 or a 530 chain? Was the rear sprocket aluminum? Thanks

Re: Sprocket Kit
Stock 530's are steel. The 520 is what I got. Usually you don't go to a steel rear sprocket with the 520 conversion because you are wanting to lose rolling mass ie the alum. Hence the quicker acceleration. If you want steel on the same site you can get the 530 set up and choose steel. Or I can source one for you from my local stealership. Ebay is good too.
And I doubt that you will have to change the 520 every 3k. I've had mine (non ptfe mind you) for at least 3k and it still looks brand new. But keep her oiled.

+5 on well lubricated BUT also well set tension wise NOTHING kills a chain & Sprockets faster than too tight or flapping in the breeze chains.

Man this sucks. Have been trying to order from sumofallparts for the past 2 days. Got excited about the vortex kit with the 520xso chain ..14/47..Teflon rear sprocket for $159..Could not get a hold of anyone and later came across this:

That sucks..Any other places to order this?

I was unaware of this. I bought my stuff back in August. If I were you I would hold off a bit to see what's going on. There is a guy on the forum selling a steel stock rear sprocket I know you are going for a 520 though.

So it turns out that the XSO520 chain is a clip style and not a rivet. Same with the GB520XSO. That's a bummer , because I do not trust the clip style . Also bought the rivet tool.

YB,
the only reason the clip style connection will fail is :-
A} poorly fitted by mechanic
B} fitted in reverse
a} will let the clip off as it was not seated properly to begin with and centrifugal force will do the rest
b} clip fitted wrong way round will allow the chain travel direction to knock the clip off should there be any interference in chain travel.(loose chain will do that every time )
I have used clip style chains on bikes the turned out the equivalent of 240BHP per litre and never had one fail, although I do know of one "letting go" on a commute but that was not my bike and I was not involved in its servicing.
Re: Sprocket Kit
Thanks YG..I would always be paranoid and check the master link before and after each ride:)) From what I hear , you need to install the closed side of the clip towards the front of the bike (for FZR) or the direction of travel.yamaha_george wrote:yamaboy wrote:So it turns out that the XSO520 chain is a clip style and not a rivet. So I have e-mailed RK and they said that the XSO520 chain comes with a rivet style master link.. Vortex has a small chart on their website which indicates that the xso is a clip style..So I guess I'll see when I get it..
Here is a great website to order sprockets. Only downfall is that the rear 47T ,teflon coated sprocket is on backorder (2-3 weeks) . http://www.vortexracing.com/index.php?o ... Itemid=111
14/45 does not really make sense to me. 1 down and 2 up is the way to go..Right?
So for now, untill I get my parts ,I'll run my stock set-up. Chain looks brand new after cleaning it with Kerosene. Found it at Walmart

Re: Sprocket Kit
Specific power isn't terribly meaningful when discussing chains. My TZ puts out over 300 RWHP per litre - but that's still only 38 hp...yamaha_george wrote:I have used clip style chains on bikes the turned out the equivalent of 240BHP per litre
Many ways to ensure your clip doesn't go for a walk - as YG says, the first step is to make darn sure it's installed correctly! You can also safety-wire it in position; you can apply a dab of orange silicone goo (helps retention and provides a visual indication). If you don't do either of those, you might want to strip the grease off the clip, paint it with bright red / pink / orange / green / something hideous nail polish, THEN install it. Look for the clip before you ride, every time - this way it's easy!

Re: Sprocket Kit
As far as sprocket size I went -1/+2 and love it. Lost maybe 6mpg but I can whoop my buddy's 02r6. Just saying.
