Ok, so as some of you know...i just recently bought my winter project bike several weeks ago.

Well I finished up the flush mounted lights and clear alternative tail light, so I wanted to take it out on its first "real" road test. So....I am riding about 5 miles or so when all of the sudden a ticking/clacking noise is heard....hmmm...so as I am finishing my little 20 mile loop the clacking gets way worse all of the sudden and I loose a bit of power....I am thinking great...I just spun a bearing or dropped a valve...About a mile from my house...clacking is really bad now and then...loud pressure release noise....yep you guessed it.....kablamo...bike manages to get me home despite a inch sized hole in the front of the case.

Well all this means now is that the project bike really has become a project bike. I bought it for 1000 and have put 160 into it...I want to keep it around 1500-2000...and now it looks like I will get closer to that number. If this had been one of my newer bikes I would be upset, but this bike really was just something to play around on...so no real worries, but the search for a motor begins.

Bike had 22K miles on it but judging from the previous owner, he probably was pretty rough on it.

Just to make sure, any model FZR 600 correct? 89-98? Or was there a change in 94? Can I put in a post 94 without any mods? Will it run better/ the same/ worse?

Only change "after" 94 was the update to the 5 pin YZF/R6 style VR. I'd look for a 90+ motor to be safe. Happy trails

I'm surprised that got you home, looks like the con rod end cap is sticking outa the block.

Any 3HE motor will fit, I'd be looking @ the newer/less mileage the better. In 94 the FZR600R 4JH motor was launched in Europe, duno if the FZR in the States got that motor, but anyways it's not a direct swap.

That just plain sucks. Did you change all of the fluids before you took her out on her maiden voyage?

Indeed. She dumped all her brand new synthetic all over the road and partially my driveway.

89 motor had the cartrigde oil filter also,

Ok so the motor broke that can be fixed by a tear down. The case can be welded closed again no big problem there.

Take your time and next spring you have a re-freshed motor not some "no history" hunk of metal that 5 miles from town pulls the same stunt.

In case your wondering how I know this I had a customer throw the bike down the road across a"bailey" bridge built during world war II with Iron wood board as road surface.

Long story short a "Splinter" went under the LH con rod through in to the gearbox and thro the shifter drum locking the bike in gear but running (2 stroke mind you).
He brought it to me to fix and since she would not shift gear I took the bottom off to find this 8-10 inch long wood spike thro two walls of the crankshaft area. Being in a 3rd world country it was 6 month lead time on a new case bottom so I welded a plate into the neatened holes and when I saw the bike last (2 years ago) it was running fine after 25 year of the weld being done.

You sure that wasn't 95? My 94 has the candy bad type until I happily replaced it and saw what a world of difference it made

Yep, '95 was the year the FZR600 got the VR/R update.

Update.

So after about 2 hours the engine is out. Pretty easy actually and Yamaha put all wire connections in good spots.

I dont doubt that welding and rebuilding internals would work, however that is a bit more in depth than I want to go. I have rebuilt engines before, but I really lack the patients. Additionally, I do not have a welder. My plan is to find a cheap fzr600 on craigslist or ebay over the winter and get it for 500-800 and worst case I would have a parts bike. My other option which does not seem as cost effective is to buy an engine, which after shipping would be 350-700. Your thoughts?

In the short time I've had my FZR, I've found that yamaha goes out of their way to put things in good spots like that. Awesome.

Find a kid's pedal car on craigslist and swap over the bench seat and the pedal drive. Those babies can really haul some ass. "Vroom vroom! Yeeeeeey!"
