I have two sets of keys for my '93. Turns out the spare set doesn't have a seat release key
Is there anyway to get the seat off without the key? Wait let me rephrase that. Is there anyway to get the seat off without causing significant structural damage/ or using a BFH, which is the route I almost took when I realized I didn't have the right key.

the seat is keyed the same as the ignition, unless someone changed it, but i've been wrong before.

oh and please put up your location.

Mine definitely has a different key. This may be because the ignition or the seat lock has been replaced. Either way, I need to get to the main fuse and don't know how without getting the seat off, so if anyone knows a good way I'd appreciate it!

No good way to get it off without snapping something...

Drill out the key hole and tumblers, and then use a screw driver to turn the whole lock. Seen it on my buddy's R6. And then we wired a cable that he can pull to unlock it. Hid it under the fairing. Do you have a stock seat or corbin?

I have the stock seat. Hopefully the key can be located so I don't have to destroy the lock. I am just really anxious to find out if I have blown main fuse or if something more significant is cooked!

What's the bike doing. I might have missed this somewhere. Have you checked you VR yet?

This is difficult to explain, and maybe I shouldn't.

Use your key in the lock, whilst turning the key in a clockwise direction (not too much pressure), wiggle the key left to right and slowly pull it out (not all the way out) that could work, it did on my T-cat tank fuel cap (no key supplied) it took me 5 mins, then I dismantled the lock & adjusted the tumblers to suit my key.

There's also other brute force options.

But more seriously. I talked to a lock smith and he said he could make a key for my trunk for $30. So if there is a locksmith near you it's an option.

@ £5+ (7.81 USD) per gallon, that's not a bad idea

wooooooh hold on dont drill anything yet, if you have a 93 fzr e.g. fzr600r then you can unscrew the rear light unit and get at the mech from there really easy to release the seat

That's the suggestion I was looking for! Now to see if I can get into the light and to the seat release from there.

The reason I suspect the main fuse is that the bike was dead one morning after a few hours spirited riding in the mountains. I push started it, but it was acting up, poor power, etc. and final it would suddenly overheat like the fan was cutting in and out. I pulled over and it dies so I took a look at things. Turns out the battery was DRY! Now it had been very, very hot the previous day and I was stuck in traffic so the bike was running quite warm. At the same time I don't remember checking the levels on that battery this year (or last year? Ooops!) So it could have been going without any VR problems.

Anyway to try and get it home I grabbed a battery at the nearest place, added acid and had them charge it. Got a ride back to the bike and installed the new battery. Turns out the new battery has the terminals reversed compared to the battery that was in it and I crossed the wires! Sppht! No lights, no gauges, nothing. That's why I had to trailer it home and want to get at the main fuse! It may be that the fuse is all it is as the VR was always fine previously (at least it charged properly). It may be that the hot ride cooked the VR and that boiled that battery dry, but first things first I have to get the stupid seat off to get to the main fuse and the VR. Thanks to anyone who is still reading this novel!

Yeah after you get the main fuse off. It's it ok I would suspect that the VR is probably going out. If you still have the 93 VR in it, it could possibly boil your battery dry. I would check it after you get the fuse worked out. And if you still have the 93 VR then I would start looking for the r6 type anyway.

So do you have a FZR600 or a FZR600r? the later (UK version) has a metal tank not a plastic tank cover, since you can access the battery (riders seat removed) I'm guessing its the FZR600r, which I think the battery terminals are reversed compared to the FZR600. I also think the VR is located on the inner right hand side frame rail under the tank on the 600r, the main fuse is in the starter relay (behind the battery) Green 30 amp. I have no idea if UK 600r's differ to US models. I don't own a 600r so I could be wrong.

Connecting the battery the wrong way round can blow the main fuse and fry the VR, if so it could be kicking out up to 20V DC that can/will cook the TCI and other components. Personally I wouldn't risk firing the engine up until I'd replaced the VR.

Edit Dougs bike (in his avatar) is a UK 600r.

I have never been very clear on what models and designations went to who? Mine has the battery under the seat and there is a fuse block there with 4 or 5 blade type fuses. The VR is under the left side rear cover and if I remember correctly the main fuse (30Amp) is located next to it. I have actually never had that cover off so I don't even know which VR is in there, but I suspect it is the stock one. As part of this whole mess I'll probably do the R6 VR upgrade ASAP.
