Things to know before doing a valve adj? - Help

Post by WSM »

About to do the suggested check on the valves.
I've got the service manual, but is there anything I should be aware of/tips to make the job easier?
Thanks,
Will

I've yet to tackle this task, im planning to adjust mine in Dec/Jan, read this in the wiki if you haven't already http://fzronline.com/wiki/doku.php?id=h ... clearances

Going by other post's I've read (reelrazor) the inlets are more likely to be tight (soft inlet valves) another post describe how to ensure the valve timing is easily maintained, by using cable ties (cant find the thread) but you use the ties to fix the timing chain to the camshaft sprockets before removing the cams.

I'll be watching this thread with interest.

You probably want to have on hand a selection of spacers, other wise you risk having to order them and having your job interrupted. Or, if you have a good selection of parts at the local dealer, you could pay their prices and have them quickly. There was/is a good deal in the "shim exchange" on the site here. Does anyone have the name of the member who did that?

Any shop should stock these as they are the same 7.5mm shims that are used on modern 250cc four stroke motocross bikes. It does not matter what brandname is on the package they are all the same shims. I have " Honda " and " Kawasaki " shims in my bike as I used to work at my local dealership. Also Hot Cams offers a shim kit that has a nice assortment of shims and is a good value for what you get. I have a couple of 178's if any one can use them.

Smaller shops tend to carry more stuff than dealers half the time

If you haven't started yet I can send you my excel based shim calculator. Also, there is a vendor on ebay that sells the shims for 4 bucks a piece.
