hi all,
im buying an engine to dismatle and putback together & when ringing round a few breakers i got offered a R6 engine that just needs a bit of work....................
if i was to get the engine back running is it even possible to fit it into a fzr(3he model)?

checked the wiki and didnt find anything bout it

From what I've read it's a no no, the 3he frame is not strong enough.

Just as a hypothetical, would a 400 frame be strong enough to handle the r6 motor?

I think if that was possible, it would have already been done, I.E. there would be a HOW TO in the WIKI

If I were you, I would buy a newer R6 and replace its motor with one from an FZR... j/k

I doubt there is an issue with the frame. The FZR600 frame is pretty darn stout. It would simply not be worth the money to do the swap unless you had all of the wiring, etc, to go along with it.

I would certainly not put it in the FZR400 frame. That frame is extremely lightweight.

whilst as it has been pointed out before "anything" can be done with sufficient money & resources, I think that actual engine mountings would prove to be the drawback as the engines do NOT share the same mounting method.

Saying that one bright spark made a set of mounting plates for a hung mount for the top of an engine that required it.

the 400 frame is a no no as if it had been possible the "racer crowd" would have done it already to make a serious pocket rocket instead of boring & stroking an engine to 560<?>

The FZR frame is more than up to it - it handles 91BHP and my 240lbs PLUS the occasional pillion, so I cant see 105 to 110BHP and a drop in weight to a lighter motor overwhelmeing it, and the FZR's steel is much more ductile than the R6's alloy. No structural problems whatsoever.

It is, however, gonna be an immense job of work and with the cost of welding materials and your time/someones skilled labour etc it'd probably be cheaper to keep your eyes peeled for an R6 frame.

The FZR is a relatively comfortable (I said relatively!) bike with a nice low range response, whereas the R6 is a heels-up scalpel with a buzzy racetrack power delivery. The FZR in stock form is as awkward on the track as the R6 is on the road, and I can't help thinking that even if you did the transplant you would simply end up with a bike combining the worst of both. Doubtless physically possible, but financially not worthwhile and the potential result dubious at best.

do you mean the r6 or the yzf600r some people mix them up. the r6 gets about 120hp while the 600r has 100hp but there only about 2 ftlbs of torque different and the r6s torque rating is at like 15000 rpm while the 600r is at like 9000 or 12 i can really remember the exact numbers but the 600r bolts in

he is in the UK so I would guess that when he says R6 it is anR6 not a YZF (Thundercat) or some other hasty Yamaha Bitsa

yeah it i s a R6 engine, but yeah i thought it might be a lot of work gettign it in but thought i would ask just because i was offered a compete engine for £50 whick just needed a small amount of work and it got me thinking!!

Any complete engine that is only £50 is going to need more than a "small amount work".

The cost of the engine and the rest of the electricals / carbs would not be a deterent for me. The big thing is what you have to do to the frame to get the engine into it and secured properly. The link above to the build with a CBR900rr engine into a 3TJ is different because of the way the upper engine mounts work. Cut them off the frame and mount new ones to match the engine. But that only works with a 3TJ. The R6 engine is a little wider than the FZR frame so you would have to modify the frame spars. This would weaken the frame. As Geo stated, given enough resources anything is possible. But those better be deep pockets with large amounts of imagination and time to get it to work. And being able to weld good enough that NASA would higher you wouldn't hurt either.

As for strength, both the FZR600 and FZR400 frames are able to handle 115bhp no problem. Dru86 has a 660 engine in his 1WG that is pumping out close to that amount with no issues.

While Yamaha likes to share engines with YZF600r (Thundercat) they dont tend to lend components over to the R6... even if it is the old R6... By all means, if your getting a steal on it, buy it, fix it, and sell it to a R6 guy... They need stuff too... but I would take that money and put it into finding an old Yzf motor and swapping the FZR cranks in there... or just put a YZF top end on the FZR motor if you want to. I like the yzf motor swap, Ive done it... I just dont have it on my bike since the one I have know is already so damn strong, not that its a BEAST... its just perfectly sound... and I like that....
