Hi foxeye pete
Am in the process of rebuilding the clutch on my 92 FZR 1000.. My uinderstanding is that usually steels , frictions and springs are all that's needed. However I was given adivise that if there is any visible wear on the clutch boss that it should be replaced. The basket can be cleaned up if minor wear where the clutch disc fingers ride in it.. As an onld car buff as well I had always felt that.. since I.m in here I might as well replace the release bearing as well.. Also check that the long clutch acutuator rod is perfectly straight... anything that can hand the clutch pack up can prevent full engagement and manifest as slippage.. I also found the clutch springs in my bike were substantially shorther than spec.. Right now I am awaiting the replacement clutch boss.. I am using all OEM parts.. There is also a thrust bearing in there.. couldnt hurt to change it out either.

First of all check things...
First up being the clutch cable.
Detach at clutch end and work the wire back n forth to check smooth operation.
It is common that the wires rust rendering a very harsh function.
If that checks out just put your bike on the sidestand and unbolt the large cover for the clutch on the right side of the bike.
No...thereĀ“s wont be any appreciable amounts of oil coming out.
Use a metric 8mm socket to unbolt the pressure plate and do so criss cross a little at a time.
Have a dial caliper handy.
Preferably a digital one.
If the discs are more than 2.8mm thick per factory specs there is NO need to change them.
If everything else checks out, suspect the oil first.
Bike oil contains friction modifiers for wet clutch use and if wrong oil(common car oil) is used the clutch WILL slip.
As been stated elsewhere check to see that the steels all go in the same direction.
Clearly visable as the steels are stamped parts.
