Speedometer not working.

Hey guys,
Last night it was raining, and when I left work my speedometer wasn't working so I pulled over. I noticed that the speedometer cable that attaches to the front wheel was detached. I reattached the cable, but it is still not working. I'm not sure if the cable is damaged, if I have to reset something for it to work again, or if the cable coming off would damage anything else as well.
Thanks guys,
-Jake

Jake,
It is possible you have re-connected the outer sheath only and the inner drive "cable" has gone AWOL.
You need to check you have the cable and the square end of it is securely in the wheel part before screwing the shield back in place or the wheel bit is spinning but not actually engaging the cable to drive it.
My bet is that when the sheath came undone the inner cable slid out on the road.

You can try to spin the square end to see if the speedo works. You may have a busted cable. Yuo should be able to grab it in a cordless drill and give a slow spin.

Thanks guys,
I looked in the tubing and the wire is missing. I looked and it's like the 25 bucks so I'll be picking one up.
Hopefully that's the only issue.
Thanks again,
-Jake

Jake ,
if it worked before the cable went AWOL then it will work when you get the new inner..
Grease it lightly not heavily, make sure that when you insert it from the TOP you have some one see the end at the bottom , have them insert the end properly into the wheel drive mechanism, then do up the outer cable at the bottom.
Then insert the inner into the speedo and do up the outer sheath there.
The reason for doing it from the top is that MOST cables have a bobbin to stop the cable dropping out like yours did so it is possible you still have the broken bit in place which will "cattle truck" the new one if you just shoved it from the bottom without looking.
If you are worried about the bottom flapping loose a TINY drop of nail varnish on the threads NOT loctite as the nuts are extremely soft material and will tear open under force
