Electrical problem - extremely confused and in need of help

Post by Jamezzz »

Alright so i recently picked up an 88 fzr 400 with a 95 yzf 600 motor. i had alot of trouble starting it but after cleaning all of the carbs i finally got it running yesterday. it started after cranking on it for a bit while being boosted and ran alright but didnt want to idle very well. later on that night i went to start it again and it does completely nothing

all the signal lights, headlights, horn etc work but when i push the starter button it does absolutely nothing not even click but the red oil light comes on. i tested the starter and it works good so its not the starter. so at this point im assuming its the solenoid but there is continuity between the solenoid and the starter so im am really confused at this point. i bypassed the solenoid by hooking the starter directly to the battery and once again it started crank. any ideas? i was reading around and read something about an oil sensor being dirty??

Was it in neutral when you tried? Silly question, I know but..

I bought a bike with the same problem you are having. Found out it was a short in the wiring harness. Whats really wierd is that it wouldnt do anything and after a few days it would fire up and other times it would seem like the battery was dying even though it was fully charged

yeah that could be possible too. i checked the starter switch and its letting 12 volts through when i press it so im pretty sure the switch is fine. i checke the killswitch and if its on or off it never lets any voltage through, should it be letting the 12v through if its on RUN??
