Hey guys. I noticed some other posts but nothing that was similar for my problems. I just acquired and FZR from my buddy who is an airforce jet mechanic. Before he gave it to me, he told me he had the bike running and ran it up and down the street every once in a while. Just before he gave it to me he said the bike would start to die after running for a while. A little more after that it finally just wouldnt start. Doing some gandering he noticed that the VR was fried. With that discovered, he figured all it needed was a new one. Well as soon as i got the bike, I bought a new VR and and brand new battery. Hooked it all up and nothin...the bike wanted to turn over at least. im not sure if its getting spark. My buddy said it might be the coil pack. Im frustrated and a little depressed that with the new parts it didnt start. Any suggestions on what i can do? I have almost no bike knowledge and would appreciate some help! thanks alot guys.

Basically when a VR fries it tends to take out the electronics with it ie Battery, TCI (black box / igniter unit ) fuses wiring some times bulbs.
that pity your friend was not in the navy as you could have given it back to him for use as a Boat anchor
J/K
Sorry my sense of black humour kicking in
OK being serious now:-
check to see if you have sparks on any cylinder and since you are new to bikes that means disconnecting each spark plug in turn fro the plug and putting a spare plug in and laying it FIRMLY on the engine case. DO NOT EVER take out a plug and test that with the plug hole open the engine will pump out gas fumes and oh shit you have a fire and no eyebrows!
You may find that only two cylinders have spark then as i said the TCI unit has fried
contact a guy on this forum called DONTZ125 he may be able to fix it for you. We have an initiative on this board to try and repair stuff that is not obtainable from Yamaha ie TCI units & peanut covers & re-cycle them by our members.
What VR did you use in place of the old one ?
Did you check ALL the fuses not only the ones in the fuse case there are others on their own , check the Haynes Manual , you have one right? if not we have a copy on the WIKI section along with a HOW TO for checking the new VR
If you still have questions feel free to ask, with sound advice and patients with your self & the bike some cash your bike will be a joy to ride.

Thank you for the reply! I bought a brand new stock VR "internet" and a battery from BATTERIES+. Just yesterday we were able to push start the bike and get it to run for about a minute. Right after the 60 second idle we turned it off and noticed the "New VR" was super hot to the touch. So the problem that fried the old one is still there im guessing. The wires are a little crispy at the connection to the VR. should I cut the wires back and slip on new plug? Also looked down in the carbs and noticed more gas in some then the others. "need possible card sync?" But at least it started. Maybe that might rule out something for a guys to narrow it down. Thanks again!

When it it finally ran though...the bike surprisingly purred like a kitten. so am i looking at a messy electrical situtaion? I here it might has something to to with the TCI box, Coil pack, Stator etc.) I hope my new VR isnt messed up now.

Have you followed the VR flowchart in the WIKI as YG suggested? With the engine not running you won't be able to carry out all tests, but do test the stator windings with an ohm meter, it says "2 White Wires" should read "3 White Wires"
http://www.fzronline.com/wiki/doku.php? ... flow_chart
Those 3 White wires each carry 40-60V AC, so a poor connection @ the VR will cause the wires to overheat, overheating the VR. If you replace the plug make sure you do a good job. I've witnessed the VR plug to burst into flames,
DON'T CLEAN ANY VR or STATOR PLUG WITH SOLVENTS. There's also another 3 White wire plug (the Stator plug) on the charging system it's located under the fuel tank. Inspect that if its damaged in anyway cut it off. It's best to solder the wires together IMO, It's very close to rubber fuel hoses!!!!
As for looking down the carbs, you should not see any gas. How long has the bike been stood? Carbs could need a clean/service, also clogged fuel filter? rust in the tank?
When you do get her running be sure to go through the VR flow chart thoroughly, namely VR DC output 13.7-14.9V, and the stator AC output 40-60V AC.

Thanks for the link. It should be easy to handle. But i noticed that in one part is said measuring the VR while its unplugged and the bike running at 3000rpms? So get the bike started :hopefully: and unplug the VR? ill try to post some close up pics. Thanks again for the knowledge and guidence.
