Are you in the states?

The FZR600 was produced in 1989, so 87-88 would probably be an FZ600.

IIRC, only the 89 and 90 models had a cartridge filter. From 91+, they switched to a spin-on filter.

As far as your shifting goes, you may have an issue with a shift fork. Might want to check the Service Manual.

Since your new to bikes. Could I suggest you give a more informative description of the symptoms, how long have you owned the bike? have gears 456 ever been usable? and purchase a manual. I'm guessing the bolt is at the pivot on the clutch lever, which is normal.

1. You mean while riding?
2. Have you tried going through all the gears while the bike is at a standstill? Sit on the bike walk the bike back and forth, try to engage the gears. Try that with the engine running and again without the engine running, and obviously using the clutch.

Hopefully it is the clutch cable or poor adjustment. Could also be the wrong grade of oil, and as mention "a shift fork" issue.

Good luck.

you can actually shift without even pulling in the clutch so i doubt that the cable is the problem. there was a guy here whose clutch plates were stuck together and draging so it wasent shifting right but if its not even going into the gears id say its more of a trans problem (shift forks or drum). is it staying in 3rd when tring to shift or is there nothing at all

You cant shift gears at a standstill without the clutch, while riding you can. I was trying to identify if it was the clutch or not. nothing more.

oh i wasent refering to your post hahaha i can see how youd think that though i was just tring to help narrow down the problem. i was just refering to that i dont think the cable had any effect on the situation unless the other safty switches were faulty but then it wouldent turn over then. sorry about that

it would or wouldent go into gear with the clutch? if it doesent then you probally wanna make sure the cable is adjusted right and take the clutch pack apart to make sure everything is ok

I had a similar problem but my shift lever was corroded onto the peg so when shifting the whole peg would rotate up or down which meant you'd have to move your foot to bring the lever back down to its original position, that was half my problem, broke it loose and cleaned it up and lubed it, now the lever moves and the footpeg is secure in one position. the other half was the shift linkage wasn't in the correct position on the splined rod coming out of the trans, a little trial and error and lots of lubrication and it shifts through all the gears perfect! Don't always assume its the worst and tear apart something if you don't have too =]
