I was just curious if anyone here has ever attempted a Buell-style exhaust that exits under the bike. I'm thinking about trying to make one and wondering what it would take or if it's even a good idea to begin with. I know it will require pretty heavy modification of the header, but if anyone here has ideas they'd be much appreciated.

I think you might be a first - can't wait to see the finished product.

Ok it is doable but what you have to remember is that Yamaha designed the engine to make power with the original configuration of 4 into 1 and that the length was from the back of the exhaust valve to the silencer tip.
That length you will have to coil up under the bike in SMOOTH curves no sharp edges.

The ground clearance shouldn't be an issue. The muffler I'm going to use should fit between the engine and the fairings since they are open on the bottom. And if it doesn't it won't affect clearance by more than an inch or so. Right now the exhaust on the bike is the stock silencer from an 06 R6.

any modding with the headers or anything? or just slip on?

As of right now it's just some 2" ID flex tubing from the header to the pipe and a reducer that slips into the muffler. Sounds good and really cheap. The whole setup only cost me about $45. If you wanted something more permanent just go to any muffler shop and they should be able to bend a piece of tubing to fit for cheap.

I just recently put that same R6 exhaust on my bike. I ended up putting the muffler in the position I wanted, without the midpipe. Then I used a piece of old wire hanger to mock the bends. I took that piece of wire to the muffler shop, along with the the new exhaust and the measurement for the header. It cost me $20 and a some time massaging the parts into position. I also fabbed up a hanger, so it would be closer to what the stock R6 looks like.

BTW if you are looking for a custom shorty can, I have one sitting in the shed now. It's the one in my pic.

So I'm guessing that you mounted your exhaust lower and shorter. Where did you mount your hanger? From the heel guard holes? I need to get rid of the flex tube and the even shorter exhaust would look good.

You are right. I did mount it to the heel guards. I drilled 2 holes in the heel guards, and used a piece of 1/8"x 1 1/2'' aluminum about 6" long. But you can use pretty much anything. I think it looks pretty sick. The sound levels aren't as loud as they were and, it seems to have made power across the board. If you have any questions, drop me a line, and I'll help if I can. Maybe shoot you a few pics of the mod.

Well you know what they say about pictures. Post them here when you get a chance. I have a pretty good idea but I wouldn't mind seeing what the finished product looks like.

Not sure if this helps, but this is what i did. Originally i took the can to autozone, matched up the can side with a reducer/expander piece, these are the shot pieces of pipe tat will change the diameter. i ended up with 2 of these, since i needed a little more length than one afforded. i then cut both of them down a little bit to shorten it to the desired length, because 2 was too long. you can either use clamps, have someone throw a quick weld, or take you part to a shop and they can make a quick piece to match it, which should only cost like $10. you cant see the midpipe here, but pics anyhow.
