FZR/YZF engine interchangeability for a rebuild

Hello,

I got a YZF engine a while ago and I've had an FZR engine laying around for years. Up until I took apart the YZF engine I didn't know it was one, I though it was an FZR engine. I wanna do a rebuild on the FZR engine and need a few parts out of the YZF, please let me know if the parts are interchangeable or not if you know.

I would rebuild the YZF and put it in but there is a good size hole in the case.

1.The main output shaft that the front sprocket rides on, is that shaft with or without transmissions gears possible to change into the FZR from the YZF

2. I noticed the upper part of the engine, the cylinder section to the head, is in a lot better shape on the YZF, so can I run YZF pistons and uppers on a FZR crank?
The reason i wanna do this is the spare FZR engine i have has a LOT of rust damage inside the cylinder and head.

3. Is there a master list or general rule of what can and can't be crossed over?

4. Will the YZF clutch assembly fit into the FZR case, reason being the benefit of 6 bolt clutch vs. 5 bolt?

Thanks for all the help in advance
David M.

p.s. does anyone know what size nut is required to take the clutch basket off?

Dave,
there should be a thread & WIKI article on making a 660 engine that is part FZR & part YZF the exact details should be in those areas.
You will have one stonking motor when you are done.

Yup, do what george says! It's sometimes a pain to find the parts for the right price to do that 660 motor build so take advantage of what you have!

Well, just to clarify some of your questions....

1) the the transmission shafts are not interchangeable. i've tried. it doesn't work.

2) combining the YZF pistons and valve head with the lower end of the FZR creates a 660 engine. Follow the link that George pointed to.

3) some of the internals between the engine are directly swaps. there is no list that contains the info. you need to follow a parts fiche to see what is what.

4) the clutches are suppose to be interchangeable.

with the 660 conversion i will be able to keep all the stock FZR wiring and controls right?

also any tips for getting a clutch basket off when it is spinning like a top when I try to use a wrench?

does anyone know where i can get that 3mm spacer?

Thanks Again David M.

David,
use a clutch tool which is an OLD steel clutch plate with a handle welded on it <BG>

Are you fairly certain of this? I thought they were different, but there is a YZF slipper clutch out there that Ive been drooling over. If it fits, I want one :D

Give Steve at Speedwerks a shout. They have slipper clutches for FZRs.

is a 660 that much more noticeable in power? compared to a 600? Why not just swap the 600 with a 750?

750 engine is that much wider, the 660 will fit the frame

Has a 660 got power best ask Steve AKA China_racer :whistle

Yes i know 60 more CC's on a bike of this size is noticeable, but what I meant by the question was how much more noticeable?

is there any interchangeability between an FZR oil pump and the YZF oil pump?
