Questions about a FZR 600

Hey guys I am new to this site and new to riding in general. Im 22 and from Pennsylvania. I am going to be purchasing a 99 FZR 600 in the next week or so from a buddy of mine. It has 9,000 and some miles on it. He is only charging me $1,000 USD for the bike. I feel like it is a pretty good deal as the bike is in good shape other than some general rusting of the chain and a few other parts of the bike. Also as is it doesn't start. We think that it may be the spark plugs that need replaced because the bike just got a new battery in april. All of the lights and stuff turn on it just doesn't turn over and start. My buddy was telling me that if he sprays it with a fluid i'm not sure what it is it starts. I was just wondering what you guys thought about the deal I am getting and what the problem with getting the bike started might be? Any advise or opinions would be great. Thanks Nic

Could be needing a valve job he's probably just using some starter fluid
1,000 is a great price if it runs consistently but it could need a good deal of work right now

I bought mine for 1600 a year ago, in my opinion I would go for it. You will spend a lot less fixing this bike up than you would on a newer bike. Plus if it is just plugs or something else relativily cheap then you will be sitting pretty.

im really hoping its just plugs or something easy to fix. I am really looking forward to getting out and learning how to ride a bike and enjoying this summer. Do you guys have any suggestions on things i should do once i get the bike? Simple tune ups or what not that will help the bike run better and make the bike more enjoyable?

Get the suspension set up for your weight
Change the oil, switch out the stock mirrors

I second the oil vote. All the fluids if you can too. Just in case, since it's sat for a while. It has the upgraded VR so you should be good there. Change out the brake lines to stainless steel braided since the ones on it will be 11 years old. Sync the carbs after you get her running. K&N oil filter.

I was thinking of changing the mirrors out i sat on the bike today and didnt like how the mirrors sat i didnt feel like i could see anything out of them. Thanks for the advise so far guys. Like i said im new to the bike world and dont wana go wasting my money getting stuff done that i dont need to do right away. As i stated before the chain is rusty is that something that will be ok or will i need to replace it at some point this summer? Its ugly but if it will work for me i dont see much of a point in replacing it.

YZF Mirrors will give much better viability, invest in a new chain if yours is rusted badly - maybe a 520 kit
and get a chain guard
