1998 rectifier and regulator with 1992 harness

I have a 1998 fzr 600 and had to replace its wiring harness, now the problem i run into is the regulator and rectifier on my bike is a 6 prong with a blank in the middle towards the bike, while the plug is 4 pronged, I tried running with it unplugged and quickly learned the error of my ways. Is there a way to fix this without getting a whole new harness, becuase the old one is trashed and I can't return this one.

Here is a link on what to do. It is fairly simple.

Good luck.

unfortunately my funds are severly limited and I have no moolah for a new regulator, but this leads me to my next question, can I rig my four pronged connector to work with my fully functioning FZR VR. I have the old six pronged ( with five wires leading into it and a blank spot as I stated before) connector that as far as i know is in good shape, but I am curious as to what the extra wire in it is for, vs my new older style 4 pronged connector.

Hi,
+1 on the link to Nas ClapHands to Nas for it

As per usual I have something to add to that:-

Most auto places sell those nasty hard plastic crimp on connectors or the ones with no insulation what so ever.

However RSComponents (website same name) sell 1/4 (6.3mm) female spade recepticals with a separate soft sheath that is far and away superior.

Part number:-

sheath = 488-1314
female recepticle = 488-1235

I include here for those who want to do harness repairs :-

male spade plugs wire guage 0.5 - 2mm 1/4" (6.3mm) = 488-1279
sheath = p/t No. 488-1320
male spade fitting
I have used these for years and never had a problem even with corrosion as I tend to use Di-electric grease (conductive grease) inside the sheaths.

The ring connector mentioned in the article is for ground so any one will do (just be careful to clean the metal where it gets bolted to! Nerd

Good call on the connectors Geo.

The information in the link talks about what you are asking. It walks you through how to use the new 5 plug VR's with the older 4 plug wire harness. All you need to buy is some terminal connectors and a few feet of wire. Should be less than $10. Or another way to look at it now is that it should cost you less than a tank of gas.

Ok i understand what to do now to keep my old VR working, but is the wiring setup the same as with the YZF VR, as in where to plug in what color wires?

Hi,
Google YZF wiring diagram and go from there :rolleyes:

I think you misunderstood my question, I want to know where to put what wires leading from my harness to my VR.

Hi,
The wiring diagram for the YZF will give the layout of the YZF VR and then it is a case of placing your harness wires to suit.
On the R6 VR the 3 white wires from your harness can be placed in any order to the lower 3 connection and the black wire & red wire will go on the upper 2 .
although one of those two you will have to make up yourself with a ring connector at one end (for the VR new ground ) and the spade female receptical at the other end.
HTH

You will use all 4 wires from the wire harness. You will add one black wire to the group that will extend to a point on the frame as a ground.

Red Wire- - - - - - - - - -Black Wire
White Wire White Wire White Wire

Take a look at the link one more time as there is a diagram showing this layout.

The White wires do not matter what order they are in. If you hold the VR with the Heat Sink up and the terminal pointing away from you then the Red Wire goes at the Top Left and the Black Wire goes to the Top Right. The Original Black "Ring Terminal" wire still gets attached to the bolt the holds the VR to the frame.

is that with the stock vr?

hi,
No stock VR's have 4 wires the later model versions R6 etc have 5 wires hence the need to make an extra wire for the extra ground in the VR socket.
