Caliper fluid seal. Huge problem!

Post by equinoxlb »

I have encountered a quite delicate little problem that is about to drive me to jump off a roof. During dissasembly of the right front brake caliper, the small o-ring in the fluid channel between the halves fell out without me noticing it. Now I cannot find the damn thing. I've called around to dealers and a couple of other distributors but these rings do not seems to exist as a separate part anywhere. Basically, if you lose one ring, the caliper is scrap which sounds insane to me. I know that these are special o-rings (or x-rings or whatever) to withstand brake fluid but for crying out loud...it's just an o-ring that must be present in each and every vehicle with brakes in some form. There must be millions of them somewhere.
Has anybody had this same problem and if so, what did you do? I would REALLY appreciate someones help with this. Cheers.

Don't jump, but you could take off the left caliper and take out its o-ring and take it into a parts supply house and see if they could match it. Just a thought. Or now sounds like an ideal time to fit a set of blue dots.

Well, I've tried various places and they all say the same thing - these o (x) -rings are not available. I can of course find o-rings but not that are suitable for brake fluid. Same with car calipers. It's the weirdest thing. I thought that perhaps many people had encountered the same issue and had a solution. I will take one from the rear caliper since I don't use it anyway. Still irritating.

You can't buy them individually from the stealerships. Only as a set and there is a part number for that. Yamaha calls it "CALIPER SEAL KIT 3HE-W0047-50-00" and Bikebandit.com calls it "CALIPER SEAL KIT 34683-001". The "kit" isn't exactly cheap and I'm sure there is an equivalent to the o-ring at a hardware store but you'll have to search and compare. I ran into a similar problem but ended up just buying another set of calipers.
