FZR600 - Regulator not working.

I am new to the forums and will be most likely purchasing a 1990 FZR600 this week. I had a question about the regulator on the bike not working. I understand that the regulator allows charging of the battery, but the person selling the bike told me that if you purchase a new regulator, that you should change other things on the bike as well. I am newer to streetbikes, but have been riding dirtbikes my whole life. I have never changed a regulator and was wondering what other things would/may need to be changed so that I can price the fix.
Thanks,
-Threat

The seller speaks from where the sun shineth not.
A regulator swap is no big deal; if this guy is trying to set you up to embrace the need to replace other fried electricals, he may be well aware that much of the magic smoke has already escaped the bike's components.
Unless this is a truly overwhelming deal and you've already fallen in love with it, you might consider a different example.

Thanks. The person selling it is a 16 year old kid who didn't know a thing about motorcycles, so hopefully was just misinformed. I have a friend going to look at the bike who is quite knowledgeable about motorcycles and he will look for other electrical issues.
Thanks again for the response.

I second this. Changing the VR is no big deal at all. If/when you go to look at the bike take the cover off and the air box, look for grounding on the frame and scorch marks. Then look at the ign box and all the fuses and see if there is any sign of shorting out. I bought a bike that someone had put dielectric grease everywhere. I knew that they had taken care of it.
Chris.

If you know your way around a multimeter, and the bike runs, you can check the stator output in about 3minutes.
AC voltage scale.....red lead to one of the three stator wires, black lead to either of the other two. You should see at least 35volts AC at 3000rpms. Check all three possible parings of the white wires (in a connector block under fairing near your left knee when on the bike).
Then check each white lead for continuity to ground-should be NO continuity.

Thanks everyone. I ended up buying the motorcycle. 1993 FZR600 (I put 1990 on accident in first post.) I love it. I went down there and tested everything and the only problem was the reg wasnt grounded, it was only taped to the frame. I grounded it and the bike has ran, and charged, fine ever since.
Thanks again, and thanks for all the future help I know I will receive.

Nice bike...
I would check the chain sprockets, before you ride too much.
Looks like the chain needs a good lube from the pic...

+5 on chain & sprockets you should change the oil & filter simply because you have no idea when they were done last.
Drain the tank and put all fresh gas in , same for engine coolant
replace the brake fluid thro out as well as again they my be years old.
If you have rubber hoes fro brake lines change the out as they are 17 years old ! go for stainless steel sheatherd Teflon hoses with s.steel ends

Yeah, I already completely changed the fuel. I still need to do an oil and filter change. I'll definately switch those brake lines, I didn't even think about that. Thanks.

I use wetter water and water. and I have a manual fan switch as well. if I dont turn that fan on my bike will get to a good 220 degrees in the hot sun at a stop light. with the fan on it stays at a nice 185.
