Speedo not working

I'm not sure what could be causing this, but the tachometer is working fine. Any ideas what could be causing it? Worked last year, but nothing at all, today.
Can't think of anything I would have done that could have caused it to crap out. The tachometer had a loose wire, so I fixed that and now the speedo doesn't work (checked, and no loose wires)

If you have the stock OEM forks and the stock gauges on your bike then you should have the speedo cable going from the back of the gauge cluster down the the left side of the front wheel. There instances where the cable can come loose and the internal gear spinner (for lack of a better term) falls out rendering your speedo non functional.

just checked... not loose. Everything seems tight.
what's in that wire/hose? if it's liquid, could it have gone dry over the winter?

The sheath you are looking at houses a square-section cable that is spun by the gear unit on the wheel axle, and in turn spins the speedo. These cables do need to be lubed from time to time, and can snap. If you pull the top end and tug on the exposed cable end, a short stub may very well come away in your hand (if not, perhaps the other end).

took it apart, cable had snapped. Don't know if it was wear 'n tear or whether the speedo gears are stuck, but I'm ordering a new cable and will test properly before installing
