Full floating disks

Has anyone tried to convert the semi-floating front disks on the fzr to full floating disks by squeezing them in a vice? I have a pair of warped front disks and i can't afford to buy another pair, and i would like some advices about this procedure of converting them to full floating. I have allready tried to squeeze the rivets in a vice to loosen them up but the don't seem to give away.

I'm not sure what shipping would be or what the exchange rate is but I have a bunch of sets of 600 rotors for sale if you can't get yours working.

How bad is the warp? Are you POSITIVE they are warped? (as in-have taken a dial indicator to the rotors to check runout). Do the rotors 'pulse' and have dark spots?

I would try de-glazing them first (automotive machine shop or use industrial scotchbrite pads) and see if they get better.

If that fails to improve them, I would mark the high spot and then mark and remove the carriers and clean up the wheel hub where they mount. Remount the carriers and see if they get better. If not add card stock as shims under the carrier bolts.

I know that the right side rotor is warped (more likely a bit dented), because it shakes me (like back and forward) when i use the front brake. I said that i know that the right side rotor is dented because i had a little incident last summer with a car which got in front of me without any warning at all and the disc got dented by the sidewalk (it was a high sidewalk) in my attempt of avoiding the crash. Now i've been riding the bike like that since then, and i believe that the left side rotor got used unequal because of the dent in the right side one. It's not such a big dent because at high-speed braking it is felt next to nothing at all, but at slow-speed braking like 20mph it shakes me like hell.

@thatkid. The exchange rate is pretty nice, but is the shipping costs that knock me down as they may reach as twince the cost of the rotors. I found lots of bargains on ebay.com but cost of the shipping is pretty high because of the weight of the rotors. Plus that the mail service guys have something (i don't know why) against packages coming from outside my country. But that is relative because i have found a way to come around their annoing habits :bunny .

I have not tried that "trick" yet but heard about it and the thing to use is the right sized punch & a hammer I was told.

As to wrped disks have you looked in our WIKI there is adisc swap table so whilst you may not be able to afford "real" FZR discs there are substitute which are a LOT cheaper .

Thanks for the info on the hammer and the right sized punch. About the disc swap list, i have seen it but i really can't afford to buy another set of discs. I have spent all my money buying all kind of parts for my fizzer because i'm in the process of modifying it (I'll post some pictures after i will have it finished).Thanks for your concern man!

When I bought my FZR, the PO had done that to the rotors. I dont think they were terribly warped, I dunno. One thing I did notice was they jingled sometimes. Drove me nuts, but they worked fine. Didnt notice any other appreciable difference though. It all got ditched in favor of R1 stuff though.

I think it would be safer just to replace the Oem's with a nice good condition used set if ya cannot afford some brand new ones which was the case with almost everyone who owned a fzr .. I'm running a single floating rotor at the moment on my 929rr and honestly cant notice the differnce .. Was always told the floaters were meant from the track and not the streets'

$17 is a pure bargain, but the $43 shipping fee to Romania is quite a big hole in my budget. :ermm: Thank you for the info anyway :cheers: . As i said before, the ebay items are pure bargains, but the shipping costs are twice if not three times the cost of the disc. That is why I want to make my discs full floating, at least untill i can afford new or used ones. I have put my engine back on to the frame yesterday and pushed the bike back and forward and i could feel how the rotor(s) were braking by themselves at a certain point of the rotation.

I had to change all my front disc bolts as some of the old ones had to be drilled out.
