Doing a mini rebuild, UPDATED WITH PICS 3/26/10

Well this started out that I was just going to take the plastics off and paint them, then I decided that I would just degrease the engine. Then I said well I need to take the carbs off to clean under there so I might as well take them apart and clean them real well. Then while degreasing, I decided to take the sprocket cover off and WOW it was filthy.

Image

So my first question is this, (mostly to Y_G) the push rod that needs to be oiled do I need to oil the side that goes into the tranny AND the side that touches the "ball bearing" in this picture? What keeps the oil from getting filthy on this end? I bought a new gasket for the clutch cover.

Next question, Reelrazor has told me on multiple occations to run the ground to the main engine buss. I finally traced it, and this is what he is talking about correct?

Image

Next I looked into the carb boots to see how the valves were looking. And the exhaust side (on the right correct) looked pretty filthy. I only have 8k miles on the bike and have only ran 91+ octane for the last 4k miles. Would it be bad for me to spray anything onto this to clean it off with out taking the valve cover off and completely going through the engine. I just don't think I'll have time for this before riding season. It might be hard to tell from the picture.

I think this is about all the questions I have for right now. I might use this thread when I start getting more into the rebuild.

PS. Our bikes look goofy when you get the plastics off. Especially the front cowl.
Sorry about the horrible pics, they were with my camera phone.
Chris.

3/22/10 Got some pics of the bike during the paint. It didn't come out 100% like I wanted, but I love it a lot more than the yellow.

Here is the uglier fairing after "2" coats of primer.
Image
After "2" coats of paint. I snapped these before I left to get some more paint. It was being sucked in way too fast. I ended with "4" coats, half gallon of paint on everything.
Image
This is the bad fairing after "2" coats of clear. I would have done more but I only had a quart of clear. You can tell the places I had to fiberglass over. And it was too bad for plastex. The other one looks 10000% better.
Image
When I painted my 67 mustang I wanted to paint the back of my phone, I forgot then so i did this time.
Image
The tank before the clear.
Image
And after. There are a couple of dry spots but all in all I'm pretty happy. It was the first time I've painted with this gravity gun.
Image
After the paint the front cowl didn't look like I wanted. If you click the link to see the full image you can see all the f/g work I had to do on the bike's left side. Not pleased but also not worried about it.
Image
Sorry about the next 2 pics being so dark. I didn't get home and get to putting them on until 12:30am. The lighting is with my shop light so it doesn't look that good. I have to work the next 2 nights that it isn't suppose to rain so I'll put up some better pics of her in the sun after that.

Thanks to Nate for new windscreen and the tail lights :headbang:

The only problem I have now is I can't get her to fire, tries but just doesn't turn over. I'm reading through some threads to see if I can trouble shoot it. I took the carbs apart and I'm 99% sure that I got all the jets back but I'm afraid I jacked one of the needles up a little bit. So we will go from there.

Chris.

Hi,
the oil is put on the bit on the inside of the engine, grease where it touches the screw adjuster. Yes it will get covered in crap regularly so cleaning is part of a good routine. DO NOT USE a pressure washer in that area !!!!!!

Yeah when I cleaned it, it looked like it had some kind of bearing grease in there so I figured I would just go back with the like. I didn't pressure wash it. I was careful with the degreaser, took some elbow grease, but that's all everything takes. I'll add some oil when I get the gasket in tomorrow, then maybe again before I start riding in a month. Thanks, Geo.

Hey your parts are shipping out tomorrow morning. I missed UPS today. The screen looks good though! You could probably get it better, but it looks new from about 2 feet away. :)

It was pretty easy, go to Oreillys or somewhere and get a gallon of carb cleaner with the little basket in it. And an aerosol can of carb cleaner. I followed these to the T

http://s93420228.onlinehome.us/fzr/carbs/

make sure to NOT soak the orings or plastic parts in the cc.
Also check at the bottom of page 1 here for some more warnings.

Chris,
as you know i am away from my desk so do me a favour see if you can track him down & get permission to put it in our HOW_TO's &/or WIKI (flattery is always a good persuader :-}

As for the re-write that is not the worry it is picture copyrights that are the big deal thanks for the offer.

That would be nice, speaking of which, if you are going to just "play" on the track do you have to do all the crap like covering the hl and the chicken wire. ALSO... for my mini vacation the little lady and I are coming up to STL and spending July 14-17 there... so I was going to get in touch with you about a ride, or at the very least some pics to put up here. And to buy you a root beer to share some stories with me.

This was (unfortunatly) Dupont paint. Hate to help out Gordon. As for the first time painter, yes and no. Yes this was the first time I shot this paint and used this gravity gun. No, because you couldn't shoot it without the gun, or a similar gun. I spent $227 for all my paint, and clear coat. And let's see 40 something for primer. There was someone that did a 100 dollar paint job that would be an easier option. Just do a search on the forum. That being said a rattle can paint job would be no where near as good as a paint job with a booth and air compressor and the like.
