hi all,

went to change my rear pads yesterday and noticed one of the pistons as jammed all the way out, tried forcing it but no joy, will try a bit harder this eve.

i think i will have to replace the whole caliper but took a look on ebay and there is none on there

do any other calipers fit without having to drill or change fittings? wouldnt mind upgrading to better brakes as the origonal ones aint great!

you should have bought the rear caliper from my yard sale

hey man, i have one if you need it, not sure what shipping would be. $15 plus shipping, the pads should be in good shape as i hardly used my rear brake. i can send you a pic if you like. pm me your email. oh, it would be the whole setup, master cylinder and all, unless you only want the caliper

im in the UK so im not sure posting it from america would be the best option. anybody know other calipers that may fit? checked ebay and there is none on there, there is a few for fzr4's and 1000's and the 1000 looks the same but im not sure,

also i got the piston back in, bled the system and tried again and it is seazed in, is there anything i can try?(put it in a bucket of oil for a while?) or would it be completly screwed? i dont mind damaging it as i will prob have to replace it anyway so any ideas would help!

soaking it in carb cleaner might work, i can check to see if the 400 one is the same, as i think i have both.

Do not try and release the Piston on the bike you can screw your disc by bending it.


Take the caliper off put a piece of ply in place of the disc, and use 2 G clamps to hold the working piston back by placing a THICK piece of ply on the outside (ie the piston is sandwiched DO NOT shove the piston all the way back as any corrosion on the piston will jam the darn thing closed as you have done with the "jamming piston." )

Then you can pump the jammed piston into the working position. Once the piston is there take some 600 - 800 grit wet or dry paper and clean it up as it si corroded or loaded with crap

i aint got a g clamp unfortunatly but have a friend checking for one at the mo,
hopefully i will get it tonight or ill have to wait till tomorrow to go any further

The 1000 is the same. Uses the same rear rotor as well. Your piston may be dragging on one of seals in the caliper.

yeah i think if there was any chance of saving it i screwed it up when i jammed it back in........
took a look at ebay.com and found a few. Man the bike parts are cheap over there! i can see why most of you guys can afford to customise/streetfighter your bikes!
getting some shipping quotes at the mo so will know tomorrow.

got some g clamps and got the other piston free, not too sure if it will move freely yet but im off for the weekend so will return to it tuesday........

If you haven't knacker your original caliper I have had some sucess with freely up stuck pistons by applying a little heat around where the piston and seal would meet. This has to be done off the bike for obvious reasons. Quickly after applying the heat I hit the caliper with some compressed air and out they shot. Careful with this maneuver as the piston, once it breaks free is coming. I wad up a shop rag between the piston(s) and the inside of the outside of the caliper to 1, protect the piston from being nicked and 2. to control them from flying out of my hands. When she lets loose it is liable to sound like a gun just went off so don't get rattled if or when that happens.

sorted....i think.

came back to it and sanded & greased the caliper and it seemed to move easily enough so put it back on the bike and it has made a huge difference!
the rear has been seized since i bought the bike so it was stiff to wheel round and the back brake was carp!

have you looked to see if your Voltage regulator is the modern type with a cast cover with fins ?

PS it is under the left hand seat panel
