something is missing here, any alternatives ?

if you said "hey Will, you don't have a nut on there!" you're right!
took off the side to disconnect the clutch and replace the clutch plates and it's just not there! the washer was sitting covered in gunk in the bottom of the sprocket cover but the nut was nowhere to be found. Anybody know any alternatives? I doubt a full sized nut would fit in there unless someone has done it but would like to ride around without wondering if my front sprocket is coming off. This is my daily so ordering the part and waiting for it isn't an option.

Got a good hardware store nearby? It's gonna be a metric fine pitch. Chances are you won't find a narrow nut in that size...you could grind or cut a regular one in half.
No matter what, if the threads are good I would make sure and order a correct OEM one (and a new locktab washer) so you can fix it properly.
It shouldn't take long for a new one to come in. looks like it has been run like that for a while......

They are only about $10.00 from the dealer (price depends on actual dealer). He should be able to have you one with in 3-4 days. But most are closed on Mondays.

Ended up ordering it from bikebandit, spent more on shipping than the parts to get it here asap.

It's supposed to be like 40 or 50ftlbs (can't remember exact at the moment) but that seems way too light for my tastes and explains why you hear so many stories of the front sprocket being loose. I just impact it on.

I felt like that also , till i snapped a bolt off ..
BTW-- hope you cleaned all that Gunk and junk out of that area around the sprocket , also that front sprocket looks hit up .. should of ordered one of those when you ordered the lock nut and washer .. the shaft looks all rusted out ..but atleast for now good job putting a nut on there ..

yeah I've rounded, snapped , and stripped my fair share of metal objects. I once snapped the intake off a solid plendum(sp) on a gm 2.8 by over tightening. I'm guessing there was a weakness in the metal but it just snapped and it was not thin. I was wresting with it (didn't occur till afterwards to just put something through the spokes to stop it) and was at 65lbs when I looked down so didn't see the need in loosening it
