Timing chain, anyone replace one?

so digging more into the transmission means i have to split the crankcase. and as such i have to remove the head, hence i need to take the timing chain off. the manual recommends using a specific yamaha chain cutter, my question is has anyone changed their timing chain? if so what did you use? is there a generic timing chain cutter i can use that is cheap? or can a homemade device work? i'm trying to save myself from buying a $65 tool that i only plan on using once

Cover the internals on the engine and use a dremel or grinder wheel.

so i take it the timing chain is just meant to be used once then? and it can't be put back on? mine looks in good shape, so if i don't have to replace it, that would be great. i already have to replace too much of this engine

yup but you better be real careful of the "dust" we used a small bikes chain breaker 428 if i remember it correctly will work, borrow one from an MX rider to try just in case my memory has failed me

or perhaps a bicycle chain breaker? might be close in size. if not, according to the parts fiche it does have a master link, and assuming it is near the top it shouldn't be too difficult. i just hope its not near the bottom, otherwise i might screw my timing up

Hi,
If the timing chain is the single length with a master link you are home dry.
Your timing can be re-set no matter what the position of the link.
I always used the master link connection on a cam wheel for ease and less likely to drop the plate or spring link into the main engine body.
