fzr600 died... Please help

I rode my bike home for lunch today & when i went to back to work the bike was dead......when i turn the key nothing happens, no neutral light or any other electrics.I tried bump starting it but no joy either! Is there anything i should check? Seems like the ignition is not being recognised.
Any ideas?

check your fuses under the seat, sounds like the main fuse went. if so, you have a short somewhere that you will have to find. also check battery connections, easiest place to start, but no power at all typically means blown fuse.

To help you trouble shoot there is a Flow diagram in the archives written by our resident electronics guru sorry cannot find the link in the WIKI

yeah i think it may be a short because a couple of times when i left the bike uncovered in the rain the battery was drained when i went to start it, does not happen when i have the bike covered so let it go.....

just took a look at the fuses & wiring and it all seems ok, the 20v fuse does look a bit melted but the metal part looks fine, i also looked at the wiring and that all seems fine too,
the only thing i noticed was on the negitave side of the battery there is no rubber cover like the positave side has, i checked my other bike and its the same, could that be a problem?

what other things might cause this?

i think i might have to run out and get a multimeter to make sure its not the battery...

its the battery, attached an old indicator to it and it barely lights the bulb,
not sure what caused it to die though, ran fine than i got off it for about 20 mins and it was completely flat then.......does not sound like the regulator does it?

will take a good luck when i go buy a charger but all the woring seems to be in order, nothing crossed, is there anything i should look out for?

Make sure the battery has water in it. If it doesn't at all (or is very low) it's probably overheating. At that point, I would suspect the regulator/rectifier. What year is your bike? If it's pre-'95, it probably has the old style R/R which are prone to overheating and doing yucky thinks to batteries and electronics in general.

yeah its a 1990 one, i was thinking it was the rectifier but that would not completly drain the batt would it?
as i said earlier the battery died a couple of times when i left the bike in the rain uncovered so i assume its a problem with the wiring somewhere

Seconded, I went through all this too. And mine ended up being the VR. Even though I had a post 95 VR. I get off at 5 central and will post the photo to the flow chart as soon as I can get home. I would get a multimeter as soon as you can, I've used it 100 times since I got my bike in may. Make sure it checks amps and ohms too. I almost made that mistake.

Also mine doesn't have a cover over the ground either, I don't think it would be a problem anyway.

is there a better rectifier that i can get for it if they are prone to problems?

also if i had a multimeter would i be able pinpoint any problems/shorts in the wiring?
i did look at one in my local hardware shop and it just seemed to have settings for 100v upwards.......

If the R/R is bad (or has a bad negative connection) it heats up and cooks the water out of the battery - then the battery ends up dying. The most common swap is the R/R from a '95+ FZR / YZF / up to '02'ish (?) R6 (they're all the same). Look here (#22):

Also I got my VR off of ebay from a guy in FL called The Chop Shop. Here is a link to his ebay website. He was very nice to work with, and I bought my vr from him for 12 dollars and he got it to me in 3 days from FL to MO.

Guess this only matters if your vr is bad.. but the link that Brandon gave you has the flow chart that I was gonna get. Beat me to it.

NAES's flow diagram for trouble shooting the bikes charging circuits is now in our archive (the down link by NAES is no longer needed to read it.

cheers guys, took a look at the chart and looks easy enough to me!.

i also checked if there was a crossed/shorting wiring and found that something is crossed,
basicaly i added an wired indicator bulb to the loop after the positave side of the battery and it is lighting when the ignition is switched off(cant be the VR can it??)

i tried moving all the wiring i could get at to see if the buld wnet off and it stayed solid the whole time so there is def power running round the bike while it is off & i have a fully charged battery in it and it was completely dead in about an hour, im going to get a multi meter and try find out where the problem is. but i dont have a clue how to use one, i have started a topic in the general forum to get advice on how to use it.

as far as the VR goes, if it is not causing the current problem i will keep an eye on ebay for a cheap R6 one to come up but if i dont need it immediatly i will prob have to wait as the bike has pretty much cleared out most of my funds
