just like the title says

i just had a issue riding my bike tonite,,the front sprocket came off
and the nut is no where to be found inside the sprocket cover

i just replace the clutch cable today.,,.
but didnt seem to notice if the nut was there or not,im sure it should have been

i thought the clutch cable just slipped out of the small clip inside the so i rolled it into a gas station at about 130 am,,,and i just got home at 5 am,lol

since it was far more of an issue then i thought

i walked home 3.5 miles,,then back with a friend only to find out it was the sprocket,,we put it all back on,tighten the chain up,,and i get about 1 mile from the house,,and it falls off again, lol

pushin that thing on a sidewalk is a good workout

o well enough story

what size nut goes on there,,would a yamaha dealer have it,,or should i just try home depot

im hopeing my sprocket is messed up,,since i just bought the upgrade front and rear and chain
i had a friend do the sprocket for me,,and he said the nut was kinda hard to get on there,,so im sure it wasnt on there good enough
hhe said something about whoever did the front sprocket before must of kinda messed up the threads
but i trusted him and he said he feels he got it on there safely

can i buy a whole new nut and threw for the sproket to mount onto?

thanks for all the info

OK Yamaha still does the sprocket nut & lock washer , this time use a torque wrench not just yer mates word for it because a dollar to dime he did not use the locking tab washer to lock it in place so it could not back out. screwy

+1 on wut Geo said, I have had mine work loose twice and ridden on it quite awhile without it backing off because of the lock washer. Now I have a torque wrench and havent had that prob since

i still have the washer that goes on over the sprocket, its bent up on one side,,i called a local dealer,,and they have the nut,but not the washer

isnt the washer suppose to be bent on 2 sides,so make sure the nut doesnt back off?

im gonna take it off taday, and hope all the pushing didnt mess anything else up,like my sprocket,,or chain,or where the clutch cable hooks into,so i can make just one trip if they have everything i need

I'm sure one side bent up is enough, ideally the washer is there "just in case". If you make sure to torque it properly according to the FSM, it shouldn't back itself off. This is one of those parts that is critical to torque properly: you don't want the nut/sprocket to come off while riding, and possibly the chain flying off, causing god knows what damage! Don't take a chance, make sure it's properly torqued! You should even be able to re-use the lock-washer. Just be gentle when prying the edges, and it should be fine.

i bought a new washer from one dealer,,and the nut is at another

but i took the sprocket cover off today,,and the threads looks pretty bad

so once i get the nut,,im hoping theres enough thread

i have searched and see that some people weld the nut on

anyone done it?

and if you ever need to change sprockets,,just gride the weld it down
any idea on if that would be a idea,,or should i find a die to try and re tap it?
i have seen people use a cotterpin, but i feel i dont have enough room to drill threw the area,,,unless after 89,,yamaha had a spot to put a cotterpin there?

thanks

I had a buddy tack weld a sprocket on once because of that type of issue.

try to drill straight into the nut and the shaft going threw the threads so from the outside to the center of the engine between the shaft and nut where the threads are then tap in one of those expanding pins i dont know what they are called there like a clip ring but its a pin it will keep the nut from backing off i did it on gokart axels that kept comming undone. just dont put it in all the way so you can grab it with pliers

the pin haro is talking about is a spring pin

thanks guys

i have no idea how big the nut is gonna be to have any room to drill into the shaft,,so once i get it ill get more of an idea on what can be done

if anything i figured i could try and find a thinner one at home depot or something, and be able to make a better weld to the shaft itself

heres some pics of the shaft, and thread,,and what it did to the lever thing that the clutch cable hooks into(that still looks fine, and doesnt look like it needs replacement,,its 55$ at the dealer)

might also be able to get one of those jt sprockets with the threaded holes in them and put a small barrel bolt into it which will also stop the nut from turning or drill into your sprocket against a flat side of the nut and tap it then put a bolt into it i would go one of these routes before welding on the nut i got the jt sprockets for the yzf engine with the bolt holes in them and a fzr sprocket fits on the yzf engine so i would assume the yzf would fit on the fzr so you should be able to get a sprocket that will work if you cant find one for the fzr. those threads dont look that bad to me
