Header came loose...

Post by delvryboy »

Bad enough it was 35 degrees w/ 30mph winds and rain.... My header pipe fell out of the compression fittings at the head about 5 miles from the house. I limped it home (under 4k all the time), so I hope there's no valve damage. It looks like just the 2 left side pipes slipped out. Is this a somewhat normal occurrence? Should I just loosen everything up and reinstall the header?

fyi - Yoshi header.

YES, and make sure unlike the PO torque them to the right value

Do NOT guess or:-
A} they come loose again

B} you break the studs.

Looks like a compression style fitting, if that makes a difference. The mounts bolt to the head and the header pipes slide into the fittings.

Ihink in this case a picture (or two ) would be worth a thousand words.
It sounds like the exhaust has anti-reversal cones but ....................

sounds like it's a V&H header. You are missing springs then. They should attach to the header pipe and attach to the part bolted to the head. You can get them at ace if you are missing them. Just make sure they are a bitch to get on. That means they won't come off again. :)

TK,
yoshi & V&H have the same kind of slip on to spigot header fixings with springs ?

Do the hooks have something to do with the springs(I have none)?

Btw - The oil leak comes from a bad valve cover gasket(winter project).

Yup, you should have springs that go from those hooks on each pipe and they attach near the head at the compression fitting. A quick trip to Ace or home depot etc will solve it. As I said before, make sure they are tight.

I didn't see any hooks on the fittings. Should I just hook them to the studs? Any type of particular spring?

I will take some pictures of the springs when I'm at the shop tomorrow and post them up.

That would be great, thanks. Also, I need to figure out where to connect the spring up top.

hi,
The other end of the springs normally connect to a tabbed washer under the compression fitting bolts.
The tabbed washer has a hole for the bolt to go thro (of course) and a lug that sticks out with a smaller hole in to take the spring.

In the past I have used earthing / electrical ring connectors from auto zone
