Tail upgrades

Post by putskey »

What are examples of some tail upgrades that are pretty simple and straight forward. I see a lot on here about R1 and R6 upgrades. Is one easier than the other? Are those the only two options? I was looking at some pieces on ebay but wasn't sure what exactly is involved. I prefer the R6 tail, ebay had one for 75 bucks, but am not sure it's feasible for me. Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

Depending on how involved you want to get, you can put pretty much anything on there. Early R1 and R6 tail conversions are the most common, but Ragedigital had a later TZ250 tail on his track bike, both cad500 and bmiller have done 95-96 yzf600 race tails on their bikes, and I'm sure there have been some others through the years. In the end, you usually have to either figure out some new brackets or figure out how to make it fit the current brackets, and because of the usual "pointiness" (for lack of a better word) of the newer tails, usually the coolant overflow bottle has to be moved/replaced with a different unit (not as hard as it sounds).

EnginErrol on the other board had a GSXR tail to graft onto his FZR. It looked really nice. I am not sure what year/model GSXR it was.

It came with his bike, and he was all hot to change it but the stock tail grew on him. I know he listed it as available for sale at one point-don't know if it sold or not.

One thing I don't have to worry about is the overflow tank. Mine didn't have one to begin with. A PO removed the bottle and put a screw in the end of the tube. The tail on ebay didn't have any seats either so there's another thing I'd have to find too.

Thanks for the info. I should add I need a two passenger tail!!! The wife would be pretty pissed if I got rid of her seat! Come to think of it....... :whistle

Then you might want to look at the R6 tail swap. I went with a single set since I didn't want passengers... this is my Airtech tail. I also had a TZ250 tail that I used for Track Days...

I'm doing a Ducati 916 tail swap - if there's a sexier tail unit out there then I've never seen it, and it suits the lines of the original FZR tank a treat. Scorchio!
