Not going into 3rd problem......Q's!

OK, i'm starting to come to terms with the fact that i will probably have to get into my tranny for this 3rd gear issue.... I've been off the site for a while so let me refresh your memory...
-91 fzr600 20k miles
-Every gear downshifts perfectly
-No slipping out of gears
ONLY when at 4k+ RPM's 3rd just wont go. It feels like i'm in 6th and trying to shift up to another gear. NOTHING. BUT, if i let the rpms die down past 4k, it will shift fine like normal with no noise or anything. I can shift it going slow through 3rd just fine.
So i've asked this before and people tell me shift forks. But i also heard shift dogs....Now i just found out that forks and dogs are totally different and forks can be replaced moderately easily and dogs can't.
My questions are...1. what do you think it is? 2. If it is the shift forks, there are three of them, which one controls the 3rd gear shift, there is a center, right and left.
sorry for the small pic, only one i could find not in PDF format

You are right in that shift forks are relatively easy.
The 'dogs' are actually a section on the actual gear itself.
Since it will downshift fine, but not upshift at speed, the shift fork is highly suspect.
I believe it is the center shift fork that operates 3rd and 4th gears.

Think you will have to refer to the Yamaha service manual as to which fork does what.
If you inspect the forks (you should be able to do this with bike on its LH side and the "sump" off the fork will show signs of wear on one lug of its pair only
(usually caused by big feet resting on the gear shift for too long in what ever gear )
Usual sign is the fork is dark blue/ burnt/ worn to a sharp edge

I hate to dampen your high it still could be BUT it is the least likely of the ususal suspects .
If you look in the WIKI & HOW-TO's you will find pictures of the deal of the bike on its side and transmission on view for replacing bits.
