Trouble starting/running

Post by mynameisbpw »

Hey, I was posting this topic on FZR Archives, but it keeps crashing on me, so can anybody here help? Please do.

History:
1989 FZR600
V&H exhaust
K&N filter (regular air box)
Factory Pro Jets (I think)
Carb Problems (rebuild ground up)

The bike ran great for a few days after a re-build, but now seems to have some problems

Sad news again. So..the day after I posted it was running great. I went out for a nice 30min ride and enjoyed every minute. Put the bike to bed and slept well. The next evening I was going to go for another joy ride when...I again couldn't get it started, it would pop, but no dice. 10 minutes of cranking and lots of throttle play it finally started for a few seconds when I had the throttle wide open. It was very low RPM and barely running at WOT. Then I slowly let the throttle down and it died as soon as I closed it. (This is full choke). I tried again, and with some effort it did the exact same thing. This time I tried to close the choke and it made no difference. Still barely running very low rpm sounding like crap. Then I just let it run like crap for about a minute and it started to warm up and revved up. It still sounded funny. Sounded kind of like it was missing again. I wasn't sure, so I hopped on and took it for a quick ride, only to discover I had no power and it sounded "farty" again. I got back to the house and shut it off. I tried to start it up a few hours later (because I needed to take a break to clear my head), and it started right up, but still sounded/ran like crap.

AHHH!

So I thought maybe I didn't screw one of the other pilot jets in too, so I felt the pipes, but this time they were all equally hot....hmmm

I went back to check spark with my induction tester. It showed no spark on 3&4, but strong spark on 1&2 when I was cranking it over. I was confused, so I pulled plug 4, and it looked fine (no obvious problems). I then turned the bike on and watched the plug spark when I was cranking it over. I then put the tester next to the cable and it still didn't light up even though I could see the spark.

My conclusions:
This sux, cuz I have no idea what to think about this problem, or that the spark has anything to do with why it is running crappy.
It must be that cylinder 3&4 are fed from the same coil and they must have a weaker spark (not gone, but weak), so that it sparks, but not enough to make my tester go.

Any thoughts, suggestions, words of encouragement would be appreciated.

Also, this site is glitching like crazy, I am going to post this on another forum as well, just to be safe.

Peace,
BPW

Nope. 3 & 4 are on different coils.

The pairings are 1 &4 on one coil, 2 &3 on the other.

Throw away the inductive spark tester-they are next to useless.

It sounds to me as if you have some junk in the fuel

also with all that "dead" cranking has done your battery no favours if it is weak.
Put it on a battery tender overnight and try again.
as RR said those induction tools are crap, and I would flush each part of the fuel system seperately to make sure they are clean.
